Just another of his endless lies. He will be backing down to China on the tariffs just like he did Mexico on the wall

It is a tax on imports from the people stealing our intellectual property. They either pay us for our intellectual property, or pay tariffs.

We win either way, so its a tax on their little guys, not ours.

If the commodities are of equal quality. Cheaper is not always the best option.

Yes dilbert....we could tax cheaper clothing and furniture from other countries and bring back manufacturing of those industries in this country.

We could raise farm wages by not letting any foreign-born workers pick fruits and veggies...

I suppose other countries could tax our cheaply made farm goods...

How do you think all that would work out dilbert?

I think Trump has brought in additional billions through the tariffs, but it is temporary while he works out a better deal for the US, just like he did when he updated NAFTA into the better USMCA.

Liberals suck...

don't have a problem with that. they're trying to protect their market from excessively cheap goods sold below their nations market price.

there's not very many products we make cheaply anyway except for agriculture

The USMCA is hardly a great money-maker for the U.S. Tell me where the additional money will come from with the new pact?

Tariffs are bad. I can cite several sources that will agree with that statement. Almost all the Trump economic advisors were against imposing tariffs. Both Ford and GM are pointing to the tariffs for costing them billions of dollars and blaming them for layoffs.
"Tariffs kill jobs. To be more precise, tariffs kill jobs and raise prices for consumers. While this is well-known among economists and in the business community, it’s a lesson often lost on politicians, including the president of the United States."

https://www.forbes.com/sites/stuarta.../#5edb0f227b26

"Donald Trump said his administration’s tariffs on imports would create U.S. jobs. But the list of companies blaming the tariffs for job losses—or expressing concern about future cuts—is growing:"

https://www.fastcompany.com/90180122...ing-to-pile-up

"President Donald Trump's tariffs on imports of steel, aluminum, and some Chinese products have started pushing up prices for many US companies that rely on those items to create final products, forcing many firms to make tough decisions about where to cut costs."

https://www.businessinsider.com/trum...-losses-2018-8

So how about citing a source that says the U.S. is taking in billions of dollars due to the tariffs.

Excellent post Speed Racer.

I hope you're right Fred, that this is a negotiating strategy, and the tariffs will go away. I fear that won't happen.

I think it most certainly is a negotiating strategy. Unfortunately strategies like that usually don't work with countries like China, just as they didn't work with Communist USSR and they don't seem to be working with N. Korea, which is far worse off economically than China.

I was in Beijing a few years ago and they were far from suffering under Communist rule as far as I could see. Just like I don't think the USMCA did much of anything in favor of the U.S., I doubt any trade deal made with China will do much in favor of the U.S.

Thank you SRXXX. I agree- tariffs have hurt US businesses.

From AP today- https://www.businessinsider.com/trum...0-days-2018-12
Trump and China declare 90-day truce on new tariffs to allow for trade negotiations

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — The United States and China reached a 90-day ceasefire in a trade dispute that has rattled financial markets and threatened world economic growth. The breakthrough came after a dinner meeting Saturday between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the Group of 20 summit in Buenos Aires.
Trump agreed to hold off on plans to raise tariffs Jan. 1 on $200 billion in Chinese goods. The Chinese agreed to buy a "not yet agreed upon, but very substantial amount of agricultural, energy, industrial" and other products from the United States to reduce America's huge trade deficit with China, the White House said.
The truce buys time for the two countries to work out their differences in a dispute over Beijing's aggressive drive to supplant US technological dominance.
In another long-sought concession to the US, China agreed to label fentanyl, the deadly synthetic opioid responsible for tens of thousands of American drug deaths annually, as a controlled substance.
The Trump-Xi meeting was the marquee event of Trump's whirlwind two-day trip to Argentina for the G-20 summit after the president canceled a sit-down with Russian President Vladimir Putin over mounting tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Trump also canceled a Saturday news conference, citing respect for the Bush family following the death of former President George H.W. Bush.

Trump said Bush's death put a "damper" on what he described as a "very important meeting" with Xi.
The United States and China are locked in a dispute over their trade imbalance and Beijing's tech policies. Washington accuses China of deploying predatory tactics in its tech drive, including stealing trade secrets and forcing American firms to hand over technology in exchange for access to the Chinese market.

A 90 day truce on new tariffs to negotiate. Clearly Trump's tariffs are to bring the
Chinese to negotiating agreement on Topics above. The sooner we reach a better Trade Agreement and scrap tariffs on china- and China tariffs on US, the better off the US will be.
