Congratulations to him!! In a recent thread on this forum I supported a ban on the bump stock. I'm glad to see that people are not simply sitting on their hands after the most recent tragedy in Florida but are moving forward to prevent a recurrence of the Las Vegas shootings in which the bump stock was used.

Bump Stocks are not a game changer. Banning them is nothing more than a political move. The banning of the Bump Stock just gives people the illusion that something is being done to curb gun violence. Furthermore the Bump Stock is an after market accessory and isn't in contrary to the Second Amendment. The AR-15 itself will remain accessible and most likely will never be banned unless all Semi-Auto firearms are banned.

That depends on the wording of the ban. It could be worded in a way that could be interpreted to ban other things as well.

In most states a person can purchase a gun and start using it without any training at all. In some states a person can carry a concealed handgun without a license and without any training at all.
Each state has different requirements for obtaining a driver's license, but most, if not all, require a written test to make sure the applicant understands the rules of the road and many states require either the completion of a driver's education course or passing a road test, or both. Here are the requirements in the state of Texas:
Teens under 18 must complete a driver education course to get a provisional license. Courses must include at least 32 hours of classroom instruction and 44 hours of skills training (7 hours BTW, 7 hours observation, 30 hours with a licensed adult with at least one year of driving experience).
Obviously there are age restrictions for driving a car. You also must pass a vision test. In many states, drivers who have reached a certain age (65 or 70 usually) face additional requirements in order to keep their license.

Driving is not a constitutional right.
Do you not understand why 2A is so important?

It is a step, no matter how small. After the killings in Las Vegas, the sale of bump stocks soared.
I agree that the AR-15 is unlikely to be banned.

I didn't bring up the comparison between ownership of a gun and driving. "No one talks about better driver training or restricting access" because there are many laws in place that do exactly that.

It's not a step at all. Like I said before it's an illusion. The Bump stock in reality is a useless device it doesn't make the shooter better skilled. They may as well ban High Powered Scopes and Laser Sights which can actually aid the shooter in better shot placement. As far as the spike in sales of the Bump Stocks you have no idea if that's true or not.

Well ... here's the trap. Bans of things have to be specific.
It's called "Due Process"!
There is already a "ban" on "true" autos.
Can anyone guess why the sales of bump stocks "soared"!
How about ammo sales? Why do the sales of nonperishable commodities "soar"?

Here's the "short" of all this Liberal Double Speak:
Don't list them on here, but make a list of the known banned commodities.
Make another list of persons who are "banned" from entering this country.
The Liberals think laws will solve the problem. They don't want something they just pass a law to "stop it"! Then they choke up the prisons with the law violators. Then they don't want to pay for the prisons needed to warehouse the violators. So they start releasing the criminals they put in jail who violated the laws they created to change their behavior.
Almost every carnival has one! We just had 8 years of the "Medicine Man," and that's not what I am referencing. "Merry-Go-Round"! Trump Tower has one ... "Revolving Door"!

But what they don't teach is:
Problem Solving and Critical Thinking!
The statistics demonstrate that fact ... 2016 ... but typical.

Like "concealed carry" training driver's education is inadequate to properly prepare a person for realities on the street (OR IN SCHOOL BUILDINGS CROWDED WITH HYSTERICAL STUDENTS! ... as it relates to CHL).
The teaching of Maturity and Responsibility begins before a child starts learning to walk. IMO it actually begins in the womb when the child is developed sufficiently to hear the environment around their mother.

It could just say devices or alterations that accelerate the rate of fire are illegal.
That could mean bump stocks and one could argue trigger pull modifications. I'd argue that large capacity magazines also accelerate the rate of fire and could be included.

Not always. Sometimes they'd rather have the issue than the 'fix'.

No, a bump stock does not make the shooter better skilled. Never said so. Useless? Not at all. It allows the shooter to fire more rounds faster by harnessing the gun's natural recoil.
How does it work?
A bump stock is a piece of plastic or metal molded to the lower end of a rifle. The device allows a shooter to fire dozens of rounds in seconds by harnessing the gun’s natural recoil. A rifle with this type of mechanism is optimal with a high-capacity magazine that can hold between 60 and 100 rounds and a hand grip that allows a shooter to push the rifle away from the body to bounce, or bump, the weapon into the trigger finger.
When these are combined, the weapon can shoot large amounts of automatic-like fire without much concern for accuracy, as the recoil from simulated automatic fire would make it difficult to hit specific targets at a long range. But accuracy was not an interest for Paddock, whose elevated position and fire into a dense crowd overcame the disadvantage of inaccurate targeting.

As for me not having anything to back up my statement about whether or not sales of the bump stock increased after the Las Vegas shootings:
Bump-Stock Sales Are Spiking After Stephen Paddock's Las Vegas Massacre

I don't disagree with you at all. Unfortunately in a limited amount of time it is impossible to cover all possible circumstances a driver will run into on the road. The basics are covered and then experience over the years behind the wheel comes into play.

Then all they need to do is amend the existing statute prohibiting the possession and/or sale of automatic weapons to the public.
There are a number of "fixes" ...
On a forbidden topic the DEA attempted the "laundry list" style statute and the "chemists" just modified the "formulas" for the synthetics.
It's a fine balance between being overly vague and overly specific.
But here's the bottom line ..
many years ago I relaxed on the ocean view porch of a shack cantina on a Mexican West Coast beach away from the beaten path of tourists, et al, and watched small boats ferry loads of automatic weapons off a Chinese flagged freighter and head up the river into the mountains of Western Mexico.
The Mexican army was afraid to go up into the mountains. Out gunned!
And I guess you don't want a "wall" either?
