My opinion is as long as the institution of Slavery was present, the South could never hold the high moral ground. Slavery is a blight on the History of Mankind that should never be justified, period.

In the movie Gettysburg, General Longstreet made a very profound statement. He told the representative from England that no Country would ally its self with a Country that condoned the enslavment of other humans. To have the moral high ground, they should have freed the slaves, and then fired on Fort Sumter.

The United Daughters of the Confederacy dedicated a monument for Polk County Confederate veterans in Munn Park

It took five years for the United Daughters of the Confederacy to raise money for a monument, according to previous Ledger articles.

The women hired McNeil Marble Co. in Marietta, Ga., to build the monument for $1,750. The company advertised itself as “the largest supplier of Confederate statues.” A petition was signed by 95 members of the Daughters of Confederacy and presented to the City Council.

A fundraising effort began.

Cake and ice cream were served in the park with a percentage of the proceeds going to the monument. Men volunteered to play a benefit baseball game to raise funds.

June 3, 1910, arrived. The dedication ceremony included 13 women who represented 13 seceding states. There was a dinner and a brass band from Tampa at the park.

But by December, the Daughters of the Confederacy still faced $750 in debt for the monument. The debt was eventually paid two years later after plays, minstrel shows and bake sales, according to newspaper clippings.

The monument shows a Confederate soldier standing with a rifle. At the bottom it reads, “Confederate Dead.” Just above, the dates 1861 and 1865 are inscribed with Confederate flags between the dates.
