Heading up to Syracuse soon

I am making a trip up in the next couple of months and I am in search of a "hobby friendly" hotel in the area- I prefer to stay OUT of the city- and I am very familiar with the entire area and surrounding towns- but I am not familiar with what's safest for this hobby. Or where to stay away from- obviously most of the city itself is OFF limits for many reasons. I do keep up with some news.
Any advice?
