The discussion wasn’t about U.S, involvement in WWII, it was about pre-war Nazi aggression and how Britain and France blindly believed and negotiated as if they were dealing with a rational state … when they weren’t. By current, 20th century standards, Hitler’s foreign policy was not rational. Nevertheless, France and England deluded themselves into believing that no one could want a war, but Hitler irrationally did want war, and that was the point O’Reilly was trying to make: diplomacy only works when both sides want peace.

Hence, in the discussion between O’Reilly and Ellison, the operative noun before Ellison’s pronoun "they" was "Nazi". It’s a rule of grammar that pronouns reference back to the last noun.

Hitler entered into an alliance with Japan because Japan had something he needed: a blue water navy. Hitler was delightfully surprised to learn that Japan had bombed Pearl Harbor. After all, Germany had been urging Japan to strike for months, and when they finally did, it fit into Hitler’s plan perfectly … or so he believed.

Hitler entered into "alliances" and "treaties" with countries he wanted "on the bench" until he was ready to "fire them." (Remember the Russians?) Germany had an adequate "Navy" so long as the U.S. didn't crank up the shipbuilding industry .. which Germany needed to disrupt the supply routes from the U.S. to Europe and Africa. (Veracruz, Mexico, was a UBoat base pursuant to Germany's treaty with Mexico ... in WWII).

The importance of the various versions that have developed over the years ... as history is "tweaked" for political purposes .... is the common thread that this country's lack of preparedness was a fundamental cause for the boldness of our enemies.

The image we have created in the World is a lack of will upon a foundation of a lack of preparedness ... Not a good formula to prevent hostilities. Now we have the impact of a guy who's paid ransom to the people who wish us ill will and who threaten our friends.

It is true that in the long run there would have been no place for a Japanese Empire in Hitler's vision of a world dominated by Germany. However, just as in the case of his treaty with the Soviet Union, Hitler would use the resources he could garner from the Japanese -- a two ocean war that would monopolize British and American naval resources in the Pacific while he prosecuted his war in the Atlantic -- just as he had used the Russian resources to rearm Germany while Germany was subject to the provisions of the Treaty of Versailles. Germany received train loads of Soviet oil and grain up until the day of invasion.

I think that pretty much follows what I said ... he made "alliances" of temporary convenience with the premeditated goal of destroying those "partners" once he had secured his pre-selected portion of the World in those fraudulent agreements.

Three signifcant Anglo-Saxon dominated countries fucked that up!

That would be Sheila Jackson-Lee ( D-Tx ) from some where in the Houston area. And her even-bigger-idiot-constituents keep sending her back to represent them !
