New member question regarding references

Newbie here w no references. What is the benefits and possible pros and cons to a provider asking for a picture of my ID in place of references? I don't see how that is beneficial to either party. I'm not arguing by any means, just curious... How does ones get the process started so as to have references? That being said, which providers are newbie friendly?

Most of them post if they are newbie friendly in their ads.

As for the DL, police often get their DL photo taken while wearing the uniform. Why? so if they get stopped they hand over their id & hopefully get some professional courtesy without asking for it. Also, the provider has your real name & address & they can do a background check.
