I felt the same in the beginning, when deciding to get on Twitter. One feature I like about Twitter is that you can set your profile to private, so every time someone wants to follow you, you have to approve them first and no one can see your content unless they are following you.
You can also block any user you want; I've had to block a few already who were creeping/spamming.
I suppose it's about as safe as anything online is, nowadays, but at least there are some privacy measures.
