I also don't find it surprising, that here in the South where antiquated religious ideals about sex prevail, as well as our very own state legislator blocking state funding to certain clinics because of religious belief, that disease is higher.

Rather than educate people on how to handle sex safely and properly, it is demonized and kids are just told, "Don't do it." That was literally the extent of my own "sex education" during my formative years. I learned everything I know about sex "on the street" which is terrifying and so unsafe. I count myself damn lucky indeed that I never caught anything in my younger years.

that's the liberal position ......they claim conservatives are idiots because they cant see the science of global warming.....but using science to explain to trans person, that DNA...and the dick you have hanging.....makes you a man.......you can feel like a woman but science says your a man. so is Science real or not?.........just because you think/feel your a female doesn't make it so....

Transgenders born with male chromosomes are obviously not 'female', they consider themselves trans-'women'. There's a difference. It's your prerogative to disagree with their lifestyle choice, and try to invalidate their insistence of being viewed as women, but I doubt the'd give two shits about your opinion of them, as I'm sure you couldn't care less what they thought of your archaic narrow-mindedness. The American South has a big HIV problem.

Rates of HIV infection among men who have sex with men are highest in six Southern states and the District of Columbia, according to a new analysis, conducted by researchers at Emory University.

In these states — South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Georgia — more than 15 percent of men who have sex with men were HIV-positive in 2012.

And in Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina, the rates of diagnosed HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men were nearly twice that of the national rate, the researchers reported Tuesday.

When the authors looked at the data on a city level, 21 of the top 25 cities were in the South. In five cities — Jackson, Miss., Columbia, S.C., El Paso, Texas, Augusta, Ga., and Baton Rouge, La. — at least a quarter of all men who have sex with men were living with HIV in 2012.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 1.2 million Americans aged 13 and older are living with HIV infection. Men who have sex with men make up an estimated 4 percent of the overall US population, but nearly two-thirds of all new HIV infections in 2010 were in this demographic.

The study, published in the journal JMIR Public Health and Surveillance, is the first to catalogue HIV rates among men who have sex with men by state, county, and metropolitan statistical area or city.

Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of the CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, said knowing where the greatest rates of infection are is key to targeting public health resources where they are most needed.

“We hope these data empower local public health officials, community-based organizations, and everyone fighting HIV to bring resources to the gay and bisexual men who need them the most,” he said.

Funny that you talk about science. There are humans that are born with a Y chromosome and yet do not develop a penis. Likewise, there are ones that are XX that are male. Science actually tells us that gender identity and sex are far more complicated than a simple "have Y chromosome = male, ERHMERGERD THEY IN MAH BATHROOM".

As for homosexuals, you refer to it as a "lifestyle" and a "choice". Homosexuality and transgender are not choices any more than you or I choose to be heterosexual. Do you really think that these people would suffer all of the social stigma and physical abuse just for what? To rebel against their parents?
