Speaking for myself, I use the word whore when I'm not mad. To me at least, it does not' matter.
By convention most use the word provider. I guess someone was trying to be respectful; a moral advocate got the word to be used by default. Yes, I'm almost laughing at the thought, but, hey I can't knock someone for trying to be nice.
However, any way you call a woman who is working be it a whore, provider, HO, or working girl, they all mean the same thing. It just depends how you personally take it.
The proper word for us men is 'trick'. We don't sell our bodies or time for money as we are the clients.
