About These Soybeans ...
This is an old one, but I don't think it was widely circulated.
One morning as a farmer was getting ready to go out into the field, he dropped his snuff can and it rolled under his wife's side of the bed. When he got down on his knees to retrieve it, he noticed a bowl under the bed that had 4 soybeans in it. He was puzzled, so he called to his wife, "Honey, what are these soybeans under the bed for?"
His wife came into the room, and when she saw what he was holding, her face fell. Then she straightened up, looked him in the eye, and said, "Dear, I love you, but we have been married a long time, and you work such terribly long hours. I have to confess, that I have sometimes been unfaithful to you. Every time I cheated, I put a soybean into that bowl."
The husband was shocked, hurt, and angry, but as he thought about it, he realized that his wife had a point. He had worked long hours, and was often not as attentive to her as he should be. Furthermore, it was only 4 times in almost 20 years of marriage, and truthfully, he had stepped out on her a time or two. Finally he said, "Honey, I am hurt and angry, but I love you too, and I forgive you."
His wife threw her arms around him and hugged him tightly. "Oh, sweetheart, that's why I love you so much you are always so kind and forgiving! And I will make it up to you."
"What do you mean make it up to me?"
"Well you see, every time I collected enough soybeans to make a bushel, I sold it at the elevator and put the money in a separate account. And you know what? I think I have enough saved up to buy that new pickup you've been wanting. Isn't that wonderful?"
