The panhandling problem in dallas is ridiculous

My favorite little kid scam in the Quarter:

Little black child: "Mistah, I bet you a dollah I can tell you where you got chur shoes."

Me: "You can tell me where I got my shoes?"

lbc: "Yeah, for a dollar."

Me: "Ok."

lbc: "You got them on your feets."

I've heard that scam so long ago it only cost me a quarter the first time.

I always keep change in the car to give out no matter what I may think the circumstance is. I have had the experience of being without a home (not homeless) with a working mother of 3 boys. I feel that I don't have a right to judge others situations but I have heard all of the stories! No jab at you by any means as I can't judge you for having your point of view. This is just my perspective on it. I feel that, if I give anyway, even though I know it's a con, I am somehow looking beyond myself and my personal viewpoints and growing to become a better me. I don't ever want to pass negative traits onto my future children if I ever have any. I would want them to know that there dad was a good selfless man. A horndog, but a good, selfless, horndog lol!

Something that I've noticed over the years: People who really don't have the funds to give to these people with signs on the corner, or people who KNOW how it is to worry about tomorrow, are generally the ones who give.

I've found that wealthier people tend to NOT give change, etc., and these people limit their giving to organizations and non-profits. They write a check, so to speak.

Still ... all good.

It just seems, to me only, that the only people who tend to not complain about the homeless, in this situation that we're discussing ... are the ones who have experienced poverty ... or who are there themselves in one fashion or another.

Just a general observation from a casual observer.

You can tell when people really need help most of the time, I won't contribute to laziness when a man sits in the same place daily (smoking by the way) begging for money. But I see their point, why go to work when you have free money handed to you for doing nothing.

The classic Dallas panhandler worked Perston & LBJ on the north side. Wheelchair, leg off at the knee, looked really pathetic. End of the day, 7 p.m. or so, he rolls back behind the Texaco (now gone) to his 2 or 3 year old Chevy Caprice, throws the wheelchair in the trunk, slips on his leg and drives home to a really nice house in Plano.

Last time I engaged a homeless family I offered to buy them all a lunch around the corner at a WhataBurger. She offered me advice on where to stick the lunch.

It's really very simple - panhandlers exist because it works. If no one gave them money they'd figure some other way to get food or money. They rely on people's guilt, religious convictions, whatever. But I never get mad at panhandlers - they're like the spoiled child. I just tell them "no" and move on.

I don't even think there needs to be laws against panhandling. Preachers do it every Sunday and get tax exempt status! Besides, the bums in Dallas are actually quite pleasant compared to others places I've seen. In Dallas as soon as you say no to them, firmly and without a doubt, they walk away. No muss no fuss.

Me too. I've even gone back into the store and purchased a couple cans of dog food and gave it to them. I'm weak when it comes to animals.

I'd rather not support someone's habit and be a victim of someone's scam. Seen too many things to fall for it.

Gas stations seem to be the new hotspot. I had some guy ask for gas money one week. I see him sit in the same spot next week at the same gas station.

Agree donate money to red cross, salvation army, donate clothes, can good, give them food, clothes or water. Stop handing out money to beggers on the street.

I agree with the folks helping someone with a dog. I don't much care about the homeless guys.... As long as the dog get taken care of.

Sunday, I watched a notorious panhandler drive his car ( 2011 Audi) to a Mcdonald's, then rush to his designated panhandler's spot without discretion.

I also believe there was a program on MSNBC noting the practice of fraudulent panhandlers with BMWs etc.

I come from a long line of Southern Baptists and Texas Republicans. No worries. I don't subscribe to either of those beliefs however, I cannot TELL you how many holiday dinners that the topic of panhandling has come up and I've had relatives tell me that MOST panhandlers are driving around in BMW's, etc.

I just think that's a crock. I don't doubt that some people play the system. Many probably do. I have in one way or another.

But most of us know that people are begging because they can. And it's a means to an end. I don't see it as a career choice.

Of course, one could say the same thing about prostitution.

I try to look at their shoes. If a MF got some relatively new ass Nike's or whatever on, I'll ignore his/her ass.

Probably not the most reliable method (could be newly homeless), but I feel some merit in it. I'm going to start using the 'I'll call the police for you' trick. I've seen cats who do the 'I need gas to get home' routine, where they're supposedly 'out of town' and ran out of gas and just need a 'lil bit' to get home. This one's starting to be too much of a coincidence.

I agree with the notion that we average joe's and jane's will help because mostly in our heart of hearts we feel like this could be us if 3 or 4 things go wrong. But I'm going to stop letting that worry own me. I know people need help, but damn. Go to a shelter or something.
