Ever since the beginning of parties in the US they have really been coalitions of people with some beliefs in common, not lock-step single issue monoliths. It isn't a perfect political system but it is what we have evolved to. In essence it is not as different from the multi-party countries such as Italy, only in our case we have "built" the coalition of groups prior to the elections rather than trying to form coalition governments after an election.

Very well put - we assemble the coalitions before the election - I like that description.

All of sudden I don't think you're too bright again. The Tea Party gave the House to the GOP and now they've given the Senate to the GOP. How did that help the democrats? Do you really want to know why there is no middle anymore in either the Democratic Party of the Republican Party?
