Try some Watkin's brand double strength PURE Vanilla extract. (I'm not sure about other brands) I actually used this when I went to camp with my kids a few years ago. Camp had a creek running by it so mosquitoes were abundant. The vanilla worked great, wasn't sticky and didn't have to worry about rubbing your eyes or kissing with it on.
Plus, it smells good too.
