You can chop the head off any faux conservative you wish, as far as I'm concerned, whether they fuck Asian slaves or not.

When I heard the circumstances of Mr. Williams' death reported, my first thought was "auto-erotic asphyxiation." If you wished to deflect suspicion, it would indeed be a great idea to make some superficial lacerations on your wrists (in case anything went wrong).

Regrettably, that was my irst thought, shades of David Carradine.

But this was obviously a tortured soul. When someone believes that their life is no longer of value, that is a decision they make for themselves.

I won't judge.

I agree, it is not my place to judge and I refuse to do so.

My Dad died from cancer many years ago and was in extreme pain throughout the entire last 4 months of his life. I never knew anyone who loved life more than my Dad. But I vividly recall him telling me about a month before he died that he had seriously considered taking his life because of the cancer and he chose not to do so. I immediately thought to myself for him to even consider that possibility was the strongest indication yet of the extreme level of pain he was in at the time.

Dad obviously chose not to take his own life but I do recall thinking that I fully understood why he felt that way. I knew firsthand the level of pain he was being forced to endure. I hope I never have to go through it!

Every time I hear someone say that suicide is the coward's way out, I think to myself, it is easy for them to say but much harder to prove.

Robin Williams' pain was a different type than my Dad's but it obviously was intense pain nonetheless! Now that their pain is behind them, may both my Dad and Robin forever rest in peace!

A friend of mine's son committed suicide. My friend told me that suicide was the ultimate selfish act. I never quite understood what he meant by that other than it hurts everyone else.

Thoughts?

So farting in an empty elevator is ok but farting in a crowded one is selfish?

What if you fart in a empty elevator and then a group of anti farters get in?

Was shooting Ole Yeller a selfish act or selfless?

I could go on for days with these....bottom line is it is your life to live or die in my book. For some folks, they deem their life not worth living....who are we to judge?

For some suicide may be the cowards way out. They cannot face or see facing many things that the rest of us take for granted. They were unprepared to be dumped by a girlfirend (or boyfriend), to lose that dream job, to lose their house, or just because things didn't turn out the way they imagined.
Others face more serious challenges; freedom to move (ALS, Parkinson's, MS, etc.), or a debilitating illness that will end in death only after a prolonged and painful decline.
Some people chose suicide other than the humilation of capture by an enemy and/or the pain of capitivity, torture, or brutal death. They probably chose to make the enemy pay a price for their suicide though.

My father died of prostrate cancer back 1997. It was painful to watch and I'm sure it was more painful for him despite medication. Recently, the mother of a friend died by choice. She suffered from COPD. She went into the hospital for the second time. She recovered and talked to all her friends and family. 24 hours later I came by the hospital and she had chosen to die. She knew she was going to have another episode and she left orders to let it happen even though they could pull her through again and again probably. I don't know if that is suicide or not but it is strange to talk to someone that you know won't be here by the weekend when they look and act just like normal.

I can only speak from my personal perspective. There has never been a suicide attempt in my family. As far as I know, the closest we had was my Dad considering it, in what we all knew (including him) was the very end of his life. Had he done so, I would have never considered it selfish. I believe I would have been relieved. Only because I would have known he was no longer in pain.

Had my Dad made the decision to carry it out, I believe I could make a strong argument that it would have been a courageous act, not selfish.

I can think right now of three ways in which your friend's assertion might be justified:

1) A suicide indicates that the perpetrator/victim was too self-involved to entertain alternative solutions to his problems.

2) A suicide indicates that the perpetrator/victim could not transcend his own viewpoint enough to adopt that of those people who would rather see him remain in the world than leave it.

3) Pending the invention of a working phaser or disintegration station (trekkies help me out here), killing yourself usually leaves behind a real physical mess for other people to discover or clean up.

(I think this unsentimental interpretation of mine takes sufficient account of certain people (assholes) to whom consideration number two might be inapplicable, and of whom we should ask that they not be deterred by number three.)

Our members of the military are dying at a selfish rate after they come home.

WTF's sig line brings to mind another question. Schopenhauer says that the sense of the ludicrous comes from our subsuming our percepts by inappropriate concepts. Was Mork just a guy in whom the avalanche of feeling-percept experience eventually outran his awesome but desperately overworked subsumption mechanism?

In the situation you describe, it sound's like your friend's pain speaking.

However, and this may not apply to all cases, a fundamental principal determining our course of action is survival. To chose to not survive is somewhat contrary to the goals of the human race as a group, similar to a player on a football team not making any effort to win or even throwing the game. In that sense it is 'selfish' to kill oneself.

I agree - I've always hated the suicide is selfish argument.
Fucker wants to kill himself, that's his right. Let him go in peace and not take anyone with him.
I would argue if a liberal commits suicide, far from it being selfish, it is an act of kindness - one less asshole around to fuck up the country. If they would all kill themselves, we could start undoing all the damage.

why are you such a hateful wanker, JLHomo?

You could have left it alone after the second sentence.

That's the second time tonight you've wished death on people.

What a sorry, sick fuck you are.

Glad I'm not you.

(PS -- wanna borrow a belt?)
