Why the border crisis is the exact opposite of Katrina
Obama requested $3.7 Billion in emergency aid to remedy the crisis on the border. The GOP said NO.
Did the GOP offer an alternate plan? NO.
Did the GOP suggest a different aid package? NO.
What did the GOP do? Whined about photo Ops. It is has been suggested by one of our REGULAR POSTERS that Obama played pool rather than going to the border, while Bush rushed to New Orleans to take care of Katrina victims.
Meanwhile, Brownie did a heck of a job. Thousands of Americans perished on American soil while Bush jerked off.
Obama has asked Congress for action. The GOP said NO.
Why the border crisis is the exact opposite of Katrina
By Paul Waldman
July 10
If there’s one thing we’re good at, it’s taking a genuine policy crisis and turning into an inane discussion about “optics,” which is what’s happening now with regard to the situation at the southern border. Both Republicans and the media have become obsessed with the question of whether President Obama should go to the border for a photo opportunity, with the accompanying and bizarre assertion that this is “Obama’s Katrina.”
In fact, it’s just the opposite. In that case, it was Bush’s failure of competence and his inability to go beyond photo ops that resulted in so much destruction. In this case, the president’s critics are actually demanding a photo op, while refusing to take any immediate practical steps to address the problem.
Here’s a front page story from today’s Post, which in the paper is headlined, “Obama defends itinerary in Texas.” NBC News asks: “Has Obama Already Failed On Immigration Crisis?” This, not because of what’s actually happening, but because of the “optics” of his failure to put optics first. Here’s the National Review’s Rich Lowry: “The first rule in a crisis for any executive is put on your windbreaker and your boots and get out on the ground. President George W. Bush didn’t do it soon enough after Hurricane Katrina and, politically, could never make up for it, no matter how many times he visited New Orleans subsequently.” Right, the president’s first job is to get in front of the cameras.
Rick Perry agreed: “I think about the criticism George W. Bush received when he didn’t go to New Orleans in Katrina. This is no different.” And in fairness, there are even a couple of Democrats getting into the act. Here’s a story from ABC: “Texas Democrat Says Obama Looks ‘Detached’ By Failing to Visit Border.”
One wonders exactly what all these people believe would happen if Obama went to the border. What sort of change would occur? Would he move closer to the Republican perspective on immigration policy? Are they under the impression that if the President had the opportunity to look into the face of a 9-year-old refugee from Honduras, he’d say, “By god, the Republicans are right. This here’s a terror baby! Get out of America, punk! USA! USA!”
Republicans actually seem to be under the impression that George W. Bush’s failure during Katrina was just one of impression management. He got photographed doing the wrong things, or gave an insufficient number of hugs to residents. But that wasn’t it at all. The problem was that his administration didn’t take the storm seriously enough, and when the horror became clear, the agency in charge of responding was led by the former Judges and Stewards Commissioner for the International Arabian Horse Association, who couldn’t successfully manage the cleanup of a messy rec room, much less a natural disaster on the scale of Katrina, which killed somewhere between 1,400 and 3,500 people and did upward of $100 billion in damage.
Back then, the administration’s critics were shouting at them to get their act together and do something, while George W. Bush was saying, “Brownie, you’re doin’ a heckuva job.” Right now the situation is reversed: the Obama administration has made a request for funds from Congress and is actually trying to address the problem at the border, while Republicans are refusing to do anything at all. Instead, they’re complaining about Obama’s failure to stage a photo op.
It isn’t that Republicans don’t have any policy arguments. Rather, it’s that they’re using the policy disagreements they have with the President over immigration as an excuse to put off any action. They still say they won’t pass reform because they don’t trust him to enforce the law, even as this crisis is exacerbated by the administration’s adherence to a 2008 law (pushed by evangelicals, passed with bipartisan support, and signed by President Bush) that mandates a deportation hearing for any minor arriving from countries other than Mexico. Meant to discourage human trafficking, the law makes it difficult to process all these children quickly, but even though both the White House and Republicans say they want to alter it, we still haven’t seen a bill from Republicans in Congress to do so. Or any bill to address this immediate issue, for that matter. It’s fair to criticize the administration’s proposals, but if you’re going to do that, you have to acknowledge that Republicans don’t seem willing to do anything at all in the short term.e
If House Republicans don’t like the administration’s request for $3.7 billion in funds to handle the influx of child immigrants, they could pass their own bill allocating whatever amount they think would be preferable, aimed at whatever targets they think would be most effective, accompanied by any other policy changes they want to make. If they had a plan for action, but Obama was the one refusing to do anything, maybe then Republicans could reasonably argue that this is his Katrina. But at the moment, it looks more like theirs.

The GOP's solution: "Enforce Immigration Laws!"

U.S. authorities estimate that 60,000 to 80,000 undocumented children will cross the border without their parents this year.
U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, said on CNN's "New Day" that it's important for Obama to see what the children are going through. "I'm interested in him looking at the kids. The kids that I've talked to, little innocent little boys and girls that have come across and have traveled over 1,000 miles, that one-third of the girls have been abused and raped on the way up here," he said. "The last young kid was an 11-year-old little boy from Guatemala that died of dehydration. That is the face that I want him to see. Don't take any cameras, Mr. President, but go down there and see what we're facing."

Children are being sent by their parents with “coyotes,” human traffickers who exploit these families, charging as much as $6,000 per child to take them to the United States. The fee often exceeds the annual salary of the families who send their children to the U.S. border. Many of these children never make it to the United States. The journey claims thousands of lives.
In 2010, the numbers of missing migrants, many killed in Mexico, were in the hundreds. Reports are that in 2010, more than 20,000 were kidnapped according to Mexico’s Human Rights Commission. They are held for ransom of hundreds or thousands of dollars. Families in the U.S. and Central America are told to wire money to banks in Mexico to free the children, the hostages.
NPR reports that in the Mexican state of Tamulipas, 72 immigrants were slaughtered last year.
One has to wonder how many of the missing children ended up in sex trafficking, drug trafficking or forced labor. The human cost of this immigrant is high. For many, coming North is a dying proposition and until the extreme danger for those that walk and ride here is eliminated, we should do everything we can to keep them from taking this dangerous journey to an uncertain reception.

Like the OP says. Obama requested Congress appropriate $3.7 billion in immediate aid to deal with this problem. Congress refused.
Cuellar is a DINO who worked for Perry until he got caught fucking his secretary on his desk in his office. He wants a PHOTO-OP.
The others of course are part of the same lynch mob who's always there.
Why didn't they negotiate on immigration reform? Why didn't they approve financial humanitary aid? Hmmmm?
Mexico is a hellhole. Agreed. Hostages taken. People slaughtered. Agreed. It's been going on for quite a while, especially near the Texas border. What's your point?
Oh, and this makes me a "hypocritical, racist, cum-gobbling golem fucktard, HDDB, DEM" in what way, IBIdiot?

The border "crisis" is 100% manufactured by liberal stupidity. From the first day the DREAM Act was proposed, I said it would only encourage a flood of underage illegals to come streaming across the border. Holy shit! Looks like I was right.
The reason for turning down the request for $3.7 billion is also pretty straightforward. The cost of sending these kids back to their country of origin, which is what we should be doing, is a fraction of that.

Obama could do that immediately with his pen. But he wants to flood America with dependent minorities who will suck up public assistance and drain the treasury...It is Obama's (and Democrats) way of weakening America. We won't be able to support our military and drastic cuts will be made to pay for Obama's malfeasance.
Here is the "cheat sheets" given to minors crossing the border:
The sheet has handwritten notes about the appropriate “yes” or “no” answers to the questions, along with some jotted personal notes on what to say to U.S. authorities. They include, “Who did you live with?” and the answer, “My aunt, but she crossed the border.” …
Among the printed statements in Spanish on the sheet are:
• Why did you abandon your country?
• Because of poverty and misery.
• You’re in fear of your government and afraid to live in your country.
• You’re afraid of extortion from Maras [MS-13 gang].
• Do you have family in the United States?
• Is this the first time you’ve come into this country?
• Did you swim across the river?
• Somebody told you that if you brought a minor child into the United States you can stay.

ASSUP THE LIAR STRIKES AGAIN, AND AGAIN.
Another AssUp screaming thread topic that is a lie. The border chaos isn't an EXACT opposite of Katrina. In fact there are many similarities, some of which AssUp acknowledges in his OP.
Why did you feel the need to lie and deceive AssUP?
