you beat me to it. i am sure this girl is very smart, but read her posts. she is not a computer expert. telling her to download this or that, install this or that...run whatever, what OS do you have etc. you guys just want to let everybody know how much you know about the subject. you are not helping her.

I would be real surprised if you had any malware/virus issues after running those three. The just use control panel / programs and features to remove any apps/software that was installed that you do not want.
You only need malwarebytes as the man said. it takes hours to run but it will fix everything.

Restore it to the original state will fix 100% or ur problem. Don't download anything just restore but just make sure you save anything you don't want to loose.

Providers charge XXXX dollars for "their time". And that can yield mixed results.

Anyone care to guess what on site tech support goes for these days? And you would be paying for their time whether they are actually doing something or just sitting there letting software run. And most likely paying a trip charge.

The first basic question has not been answered. Is this a brand new out of the box laptop or is this a "new to me" laptop?

She could always take it back where she got it and pay for them to clean it, like I said in my first post, or take a chance that some client on here would be willing to do some sort of barter to have it taken care of.

Agree and like them not meaning to be a jerk because I think she's very nice but if you don't know how to set a pop-up blocker you most likely can't restore or anything else.

She needs someone that she knows and trusts to go to her place and help.

That is such bull (the concept, not your statement). Since it is a "new" computer I would just do a factory reset. Seeing that it came with windows 8, I am assuming that it is a 'newer' model. Typically all newer laptops dont come with a recovery disk anymore, rather they have a secret factory reset partition.

**** BOTH OPTIONS WILL DELETE ANY PROGRAM / FILES ****
Save anything you want on a flash drive.

**Also write down, take a picture of, use another computer if you are going to follow these steps. Once your computer restarts you wont be able to read anything or google anything until its finished.

Option 1.
Hopefully you do you have the option to factory reset (Personally I dont have HP so I googled it, all laptops have different methods to factory reset)

1. Plug in laptop (dont want it to die during the reset)
2. Hit Start > All Programs > System Recovery > PC Recovery
3. Select PC Recovery then hit Next
4. - Computer should restart dont panic -
5. "Welcome Window" > hit OK
6. Should have a "System Recovery" option
7. Computer should restart a bunch of times and take ~3-4 hours to finish.

Or in the start menu search for "Recovery" or "Recovery Manager"

If you cant find / your computer doesnt have this option:

^ You have to spam the F8, hitting it once doesnt do anything unless you have perfect timing.


Option 2 (Nerdier way) Reformatting your computer via reinstalling OS.

You either need a Windows CD or pirate it and just do a reformat. Its not too complicated but it can be confusing for anything not tech savvy.

Essentially go through the installation process, but say partition HDD.

* Note: from what Ive noticed Windows 7 will install all the necessary drivers (program) e.g. your network card driver, without it = no internet. Assuming 8 will too. But just in case download all necessary drivers and save them on a flash drive.

^ I can help with this if you trust me with your laptop. It should take ~3-5 hours depending on your computer's specs.

** If not you can download TeamViewer which allows someone to control your computer remotely, and hopefully they can solve it.

step 1. Turn computer off.
Step 2. Take it back to the store and exchange for a windows 7 machine

Step 3. find someone who can uninstall all the extra crap and install the following:
a. Spybot (with resident blocker+immunization)
b. AVG or avast
c. google crome.
