Part of the answer might be "the liberals ruined it", but a second part is "the conservatives held on too long to the parts that became obsolete".
And then there is the part that the country changed around them.
This is not my father's US, and that is both good and bad. The next generation will say the same thing.
The privileged people always claim things are getting worse--and privileged can be defined many ways.

The U.S. based, multi-national corporations and their executive level administrators.
While once loyal to the US and her citizens (their workers and consumers), they now work diligently to bring down borders. They desire a one-world government and single world currency.

When our government started ignoring the Constitution because it was too restrictive is when the demise started. The Constitution was purposely written to limit government, not to limit the people.
