I always remind my friends to be careful to pay attention in the car...too many people get on the phone and don't pay attention to threatening situations.

As far as the phone goes, at the mall, bank, on the sidewalk in the boutique, when you are on the phone, your attention is on the conversation, not on your surroundings. Find a safe position, a corner, wall, or even a cafe, where you can have the conversation and keep a vigilant eye out.

Attitude, confidence and will to win all play an important part as well. The old controversy of to fight back or not still runs rampant. Self-visualization, imagining a problem and developing a plan before something happens will increase your chances tremendously and boost your confidence. An attacker does not want confidence, an attacker wants a scared pacifist. Be trouble.

Sometimes that's hard. I don't want trouble & will go to great lengths to avoid it. But if it shows up unexpectedly--well, I'm not big & scary & I don't know anything about unarmed combat. The plan?

Emphasize don't ever let them see that flash in your eyes, always stay calm and unaffected. Be cold, cool, and calculating.
