Well as a shorter woman (5'5'') before heels if we're talking what's called "civvie dating" i'm more attracted to men 5'10'' and taller. While I might NOT NEED to feel protected by someone bigger (or taller rather) ... I like it. I prefer it.
I like the idea of looking up at my man and I like the feeling of him covering/hovering over me, feeling enveloped in his presence, I like him leaning down over me a little bit to get a kiss. It doesn't make me feel small though as in weak or inferior in the least bit....if anything I might just feel more beautiful. And I like/don't mind the weird looks IF any of/while being with a much taller man if i'm not wearing any shoes that add to my height.

So it's not so much that you feel like the tallness protects you but you would just rather feel the comfort of a taller man, I completely understand because I am still attracted to tall men it's just that shorter ones catch my eye. I think with both of us this is a case where opposites attract to each their own.
