Hattiesburg Residential Info
Hey Hattiesburg residents & natives, I'm sizing you up for possible relocation.
Can you pretty, pretty, please, with whip cream, sprinkles, and a cherry on top tell me what areas are best for family living? Preferably on an acre+ so not inner city is what I'm looking for. Somewhere I can keep chickens maybe? Outside city limits areas.
I've been trying to search for geographical county line type maps, but have thus far been unsuccessful. So what better way to learn than to ask direct right? Help me out!
Tanks you berry mush!

The west side of Hattiesburg is nice. You can get your country living and still only be 10-15 minutes from the mall and most of the good restaurants.

Thanks nsaman, can you be a little more specific on west side please, you're dealing with a directionally deficient, entirely GPS dependent chick, I'm not too sure what the west side is. Do you happen to know a sub division that marks the area or something like that I can search for?

Here's the thing , everybody is right so far , but west side is also by far the most expensive because of the school system's there . If you go past hardy street and look up the 49 North area and even on hiway 42 going toward Sumrall its much much cheaper but about as nice . Its just in a not so desirable school district . If school district is not an issue for you then you can save megabucks and probably for you it would be a safer area for your trade . just mho .

Thank you! I will indeed be asking for more help, and running areas by those of you who know so I don't end up in a slum without knowing.. Damn real estate people only take you by a property in the middle of the day on a week day so you never really see what it's like.

This helps so much! I know I sound like I'm slightly retarded, but never been a scout, camping, non of that, and I only always use GPS lol I know what area you guys are talking about now! Thank you!!

Yeah, had abso fucking lutely no idea, at all, what so ever that there was even a rhyme or reason to highway numbering. Jeez.. talk about a stereo typical female. No wonder I'm always lost.
Hope this helps

Define most expensive for me please? I'm looking to stay in $850-1000/month and 2-3br 2ba, is this feasible for the west side? Or am I looking at way above that range there? School systems are irrelevant, but don't want to be near any Martin Luther King Streets or the sorts. I'm unfamiliar with Sumrall, or anything up that way really, is there a landmark or something I can go by to mark the area you're talking about?

I've heard the burg is a lot like Jackson, in how it goes from nice, to decent, to ghetto within just a few blocks. Talk to me like I'm a retard when you're talking directions and area please, you'll not offend I promise. I'll be taking a look around a lot within the next few months and trying to get acquainted with the area. Thanks very much for your help, with a little good fortune and proper planning I will be making a move after classes end and Xmas is over.

Lol , we're not talking MLK streets , if your wanting to rent then 850 to 1k will serve you just fine around here in most areas . Look for rentals on craigslist for Hattiesburg . A lot of people around here post their country houses on there . The area I mentioned is still sort of westerly but mostly northwesterly . The difference is the counties . The area the other guys mentioned is Lamar county . Its a thriving county with top notch schools so real estate and rentals bring more of a premium . The area I mentioned is Forest County which has less attractive school systems and is cheaper . I suspect its cheaper up here than the coast . Hope you find something , you can count on seeing me for sure <grin >

Yes that could be true about within a few blocks but your looking for more of a country setting and that's not going to apply . Hattiesburg has its old part situated downtown of course and that's where you can go from nice to ghetto in a few blocks . the more you head out in any direction you won't find much of that at all . A few place outside of the burg that might work for you would be Purvis , Petal , Seminary , Sumrall . Those are all about 8 to 15 miles out . Are you planning on going to school up here ?

If you choose Petal, taxes are high if you own. The school system is extremely valued here & it seems so many want to move here. If you rent, it won't affect you. If you do plan to buy & Petal interests you, look in the county. It's much cheaper tax-wise.

Really only one thing to do - come up early one morning - having read newspaper and craigslist - start in Sumrall - start driving east through Lamar County /Hattiesburg City / Petal City / Forrest County.... There are so many pockets of nice and not so nice, expensive and not so expensive areas that it is almost impossible unless you have some sort of experience actually being here and taking a look
