I was raised to believe men and women play by different rules. The absolute worst thing a woman could do was cheat, for that there would be NO TOLERANCE. A man however could cheat but should never abandon his family. It was just a given that men stray and it only became a problem if he was disrespectful (boastful) in doing so OR even more problematic was if the wife didn't look the other way because that would mean she didn't respect him as a man.

When I was 7, my aunt caught her husband cheating and made a mockery of him. She told whoever would listen of his transgressions and in doing so, made my grandmother very angry. I remember my aunt crying and yelling at both my grandma and my mother for taking his side and when she ran out of the room my mom followed. My grandma then turned to me and said "Little girl...blah blah" - I couldn't understand her but she was very serious. When I was 12 (she long passed) I heard my mom say that same thing over the phone. I asked what that meant and it translated to; DON'T GO LOOKING FOR WHAT YOU DON'T WANT TO FIND. I was baffled - what? Why would you look for something UNLESS you want to find it.

I understand that now.

If you have a good man, A REAL ONE - one that provides, protects you and is committed to you -cheating can be forgiven. I don't think it's the worst thing but that's my opinion.

Marriage is a partnership and I looked at mine as a team. If you play pro basketball and your team member fouls and sends the other team to the free throw line, you shouldn't turn on him - that's bad for morale. Instead you should pat him on his head as a sign of that's not going to cut it but I understand.

The dynamics in a marriage are constantly changing and relationships get complicated. My husband is the best man I know and he cheated. We had an awful sex life and even when I found out, I did not make it a bigger issue. We got through that it was our differences on other things that left us unable to connect. Even in divorce, we sat down (as a team) to decide what we should do next to ensure both of us could move on without disruption. We had that down but we both knew that if we stayed together, we'd never win the championship.

If a man cheats it does not necessarily mean he's disrespectful to his wife or a bad man. If a wife stays, doesn't mean she is co-dependent or accepting of disrespect. People make lots of mistakes - you have to be mature enough to view the relationship as a whole.

I had a friend who caught her husband. She burned his belongings and scratched his car. She left him and never looked back - she's single and hopping from city to city looking for a new job, new life, new man...happiness. He moved on too - got married again, had a baby. Poor gal, she'll never meet anyone as good as he was to her. They don't make men like that anymore ...
