Thanks folks for some actual answers to the question that was posed. Great suggestions, they will be helpful as I am always all around town working most days, and a few different places to jump into when needed will help.

If you have a smart phone that supports tethering you can get online anywhere you have a signal on the phone. It is also secure which wifi hot spots are not. If you are going to be online for a while you may need to plug the phone into something.

My work takes me all over the grid in Austin and sometimes to other parts around the State of Texas. WiFi is not hard to find, as has been pointed out. I do the tether option almost exclusively rather than use other's WiFi for the security, even if I am at a Starbuck's and/or other establishment(s) that offer free internet. Never trusted those places, and the other patrons some of whom make it their hobby to break into other's computers and nose around. In this town, we have more than our fair share of tekkie hackers. A problem for going to the tether option for me was that I had to relinquish my unlimited monthly minutes and go to another plan that limits the number of gigs each month. I can always purchase more band width, if needed and the cost is pretty reasonable. So far, it has proved to be a good choice.
I've also learned to use my vehicle as an office. It is quiet and I always have a power source. I have no problem spending an hour or so knocking out a report or long e-mail message that may require some thought in a silent environment. I also find myself quite frequently in a Starbuck's using the tether. Of course, being the true gentleman that I am, I always purchase "something" in order to defray their over head expenses.

Flying Saucer on north Lamar is good. Lots of tables, great craft beers, cute waitresses. I see people workign there all the time and management couldn't care less.

Millwood Branch Library location, 1 block south of Parmer lane about 1/4 mile west of Mopac if you're up north.. It is on Amherst lane between Duval and Parmer.
