Did You Have a Favorite Christmas Toy?

For those of you that know me; you know that I collect things and am interested in things from the past, especially Americana. And, with the Christmas Season fast approaching; I’m sure distant memories are awoken in most all of us, as well as hopes and dreams for the future.

So, at the risk of getting my balls broken from my fellow Board miscreants, I’ll share with you my favorite Christmas toy. I discovered it under the tree one Christmas morning way back in the late 1960s.

When I was a little boy, my favorite show was “Lost in Space”. I got to stay up past bedtime on Tuesday night to watch it. Luckily, those were the days when prime-time programming started at 7:30 not 8:00. So, I burned the midnight oil and stayed up ‘til 8:30! On the contrary, if I was bad, my mother would send me to bed not allowing me to watch my favorite show. Ouch!

Which brings me to the toy: Under the tree was the Jupiter 3 (the spacecraft that the Robinson family traversed the universe with), the Chariot (a track vehicle that looked like a cross between the Lunar Rover and a San Francisco cable car!), and a few other incidentals that I can’t remember.

Well, my spacecraft was a little underwhelming. It was made out of Styrofoam. But the Chariot was cool as hell! It followed a flexible, tubular track that could be laid out any way desired.

My father had everything up and running in no time. The Chariot was now humming along its track around the spaceship and, needless to say, I was mesmerized! At that very moment my little sister bounded into the room, took a bad step, fell down and smashed my fuckin’ Styrofoam Jupiter 3 to smithereens!!!

God Bless the old man. The next day, he spent hours trying to glue the thing back together, but it was never the same. The Jupiter 3 lived out the rest of its days in “dry-dock”!!!

errrrr I was already there Tiger LOL

marry xmass drummer. so when did you get the first drum?

mmmmmm as a rug rat, errrrr nothing comes to mind. later 4th grade a go-kart that was gift to many 6 total, errr teen a flatbed diamond T dump truck that starter casting cracked, being a very old truck then no parts could be found. So grand pa gave errr same six the truck to race around the farm. We pulled it with a HI W-4 tractor to start it. errrr and the tractor was even older. Edit: tractor was a crank start. never did, but I almost broke a arm starting tractors on the farm, out of six, two along with the 4 cylinder Lincoln welder where crank start. Welder had a old ford motor that the crank rear seal was hammer in lead.

It did upset grand ma when see saw us driving both at same time driving go-kart under the T-dump as it was moving. dang I wish grand ma did not destroy the super 8 film grand pa was shooting of us doing that. heh she always was a kill joy LOL

You're not boring. Those things are precious to you, as they should be.

My most cherished possession is a manger that my dad bought in the mid '60s from WT Grant dept. store. Every year I'd ask him if we could buy another statuette and we'd be off.

I own tens of thousands of dollars in sports memorabilia, and tens of thousands in drums, keyboards, and sound gear. If, God forbid, the house ever caught fire and I could save one thing, it would be that manger. It’s probably worth 20 bucks to some one else, but to me it’s my most prized possession.

I never had one. Like I said, I was joking. It's quite a collector's item, though. I personally enjoy the way she came about. The comics are funny, and I can relate to them... :=) I have been unable to locate any already translated in a mimic strip.

OSD, it seems you have some great memories of Christmas past. You were fortunate to enjoy a lot of cool stuff. That's priceless. Pretty adventurous too!

To answer your question; I got my first drum in sixth grade. It was a snare drum, not a complete drum set. It’s obvious now the old man couldn’t afford a whole kit. But, nonetheless, I was thrilled.

The snare was from a budget manufacturer: Kent drums. I believe they were made somewhere in New York State. Cool red sparkle finish!

I was blessed to have loving and supportive parents that served as the vehicle for my aspirations. I’ve seen many, many talented kids whose parents couldn’t further their passions because of disinterest and/or financial constraints. As a result, these talents were never realized. Very sad.
