A Late Post-Super Bowl Thought

At this point the Super Bowl is old news, but there is one story angle that was pretty much neglected in the pregame hype and in the aftermath.

Although I have no personal interest in either team, I was rooting for the Packers all the way. This is for one petty, vicious, but ultimately satisfying reason: to make Brett Favre cry like a little girl.

Back in 2008, Favre did his retire-unretire thing in Green Bay with the goal of getting out of a rebuilding situation and onto a SB contender. He got his wish (sort of) when he was traded to the Jets. A season later he signed with the Vikings, where he had wanted to be all along. Having this overrated, prima donna, manipulative, unrepentant drug addict of a cracker (and I use that term as someone with Scotch-Irish Southern roots) have to sit at home and watch the team he abandoned win a title in the same year his career ended with a whimper gave me way more satisfaction than it should have. But it felt s-o-o-o good!

I am with you gryphon. Green Bay was right in getting rid of this hyped up overrated
qb. Yeah, he won a super bowl. Career performances in the playoffs and superbowl by Desmond Howard led special teams left him with consistently good field position to throw to Freeman and Rison,still in their prime. Less field for him to blow it with an interception or a fumble. He was always a gunslinger. You throw that often you will have big numbers, i.e. Dan Marino, Warren Moon, Dan Fouts, among others, but no title. He cost his teams more big games than he won. Don't know his playoff record, but fairly sure it isn't great.

A few stats..in 2 Super Bowls he had over 500 yds with 5 Tds, 1 pick and passer rating of of 97.6. He had 45 game winning drives, was 13-11 in playoffs, 2 time MVP,holds most every QB passing record there is, 11 time pro bowler and holds what is now considered the most fantastic of all ironmen records for consecutive starts.

Yes, he had treatment for painkiller addiction, yes he was a philander(who on this board is not? pot calling the kettle black), yes he was a gunslinger who also threw the most Ints. But he was undenialably one of the best and toughest players ever in the NFL.

I am no #4 apologist, he needs no one to stick up for his career, I guess I am only pointing this out because I was a fan of his. I didn't know him, but after his first MVP season I got lucky and played a round of golf with by accident, and he was a great guy for those 5 hours. Humble, unassuming, just a regular guy who was the best player in the NFL. An example, when we all introduced ourselves on 1st tee, he just stuck out his hand and said "I'm Brett". It wasn't until I looked on the back of his golf bag and saw Brett Farve did I know it was him. We played for 25 cent skins, lol. Anyway, don't know why you dislike him so much, but the above stats and personal experience is why I do like him. Hellavu QB, tough as nails, enjoyed a few beers and loved to chase pussy, what's not to like? lol

--The addiction treatment was forced by the Packers; he insisted he didn't have a problem and checked himself out early after self-admittedly picking Vicodin tablets out of his own vomit to swallow them again. No repercussions for not completing treatment.

--Way too many stupid, game-losing interceptions, most of which were followed by the announcer (you hear me, John Madden?) gushing about how he's just like a kid having fun out there. Yeah, that throw looked like it was made by a 12-year-old, all right.

--Way too many profile pieces and interviews that were the journalistic equivalent of BBBJCMNQNS. (You hear me, Peter King?)

1)imagine that, someone with a drug addiction saying they didn't. BTW, that took place what 16 years ago? BTW, how many NFL players you think overused painkillers in this brutal profession?

2)You don't like the fact he played with a kid like unbridled enthusiam? Wow, I wish more professional athletes played the game like a kid instead of a robot. As mentioned he throw alot of INT's that only happens when one has the balls to try and win the game, put yourself on the line...

3)you don't like him cause he was a huge star that was a great interview and got lots of attention. He can't help it if the media gave him the occasional sloppy blow job

4)NFL is a business...he never forced the Jets or Vikings to pucker up and write huge checks for his services, and as far as missing training camp? Points out he is smarter then you give him credit for, it is a tactic all veterans use to get out of training camp, only works if your a stud and can back it up during the real season

5)Hey leave us guys with small penis's out of this, and you really think he was throwing himself at the nice little lady from the Jets without her permission? Really? That gold digging ho? So he did some sexting, so what, so have I, the dissappointment was that he did it on his wife...that was not cool.

Again, he is not even my favorite QB, but facts speak for themselves, he was one of the best ever, but more importantly, tougher then an old boot who loved to play football, we are about the same age, wish I was still playing and catching heat for it on this board...

Sipsapi, I am not jealous, nor do I hate the guy. Neither he or any pro jock has had or will have an impact on my life. After you're done staring at the pedestal, picture this: His on and off retirement decisions screwed up his teammates and what little chemistry was left between them and the coach. Coach ends up canned and they were just a shell from last season. He was exciting to watch until he made some boneheaded plays. He could have walked away with dignity after ending last season the way he did. But no, it was me, me, and more look at me. Good riddance to another arrogant jock who stayed around to be ridiculed and embarrased his team and family.

I compare Favre to Pete Rose. Both were over achievers who weren't that gifted physically, but made themselves successful through hard work and desire. Favre and Rose were flawed individuals when it came to morals and decision making. But on the field of play, they performed with unbridled fire and enthusiasm. They both should have called it a career a few seasons sooner than they did. But they played the game the right way. I would take both of them on my team.

a couple interesting facts:

Favre's last two teams went further the season after he left than they did during his last season. be interesting to see if this holds true with the Vikings.

the only way the Green Bay Packers can make it to a Superbowl since Lombardi retired is to hire a San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator as their head coach.

I was simply giving a review of my encounter with Farve, YMMV, and I probably won't even get credit for this review.

Name dropping would be when I used to go to Ghandi's house to play Yatzee.

Was not really a milestone, didn't play that well that day. As far as a mancrush...I couldn't have one on Farve, gray hair and Wranglers are a definite turnoff for me. Now Tom Brady...
