The food here IS amazing--which is one reason restaurant suggestions are so iffy--you can find perfectly good food ALMOST everywhere in NOLA--there's a lunch place across from work that serves perfectly good creole food, as does the neighborhood joint six blocks from my apt., but my FAVORITE food is:
1. Jacques Imo's in Leonidas (you should get a cab if you're downtown or in Metairie). Overall my favorite restaurant in NOLA.
2. Bon Ton Café in the CBD. The crawfish dinner is fantastic. A little pricey.
3. Acme Oyster House (I prefer it to Drago's & it's less expensive) in Fr. Qtr. or Metairie. Get the char-grilled oysters & a salad. Then get more char-grilled oysters.
4. Butcher deli on Andrew Higgins (behind Cochon). Order something w/duck pastrami.
5. Mosca's (way out in Avondale--convince a local to take you; it's hell to find on your own & a cab would be insanely expensive). Get the chicken a la grande. The waitress will put the leftover rosemary & white wine sauce in a container & some bread for you to have later. It's worth it. I s**t-thee-not it's about the best-tasting thing ever. E-VER.
6. I hesitate to make this suggestion to someone visiting from California, b/c they think the only Mexican food is Cal-Mex., but Juan's Flying Burrito is excellent. There is a Juan's Uptown on Magazine St., & one in Mid-City (I think the Mid-City one has better food but I'm biased). I'm convinced some of the cooks spent time in North Carolina as construction workers or farm workers before going into restaurants: who ELSE would do a pork & slaw taco? That's a VERY North Carolina-thing to do to a taco & it's delicious. It isn't the best-Mexican-food-on-the-PLANET--that's in Santa Fe NM of course--but it's quite good.
7. New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood: A local chain. If you're not in the mood for fancy, but just want a burger or a po'-boy--the buffalo shrimp po-boy w/slaw is yummy. Also, eat there AFTER your last date, since the garlic-fries are delicious (it's what gets people to return) but they ARE quite garlic-y. Mmmmm, garrrrr-liiiiic friiiiies...
I've heard good things, and want to try:
8. Adolfo's: in the Marigny (just North of the Fr. Qtr.--an easy cab ride for you if you're downtown). Like Mosca's, it's very "creole Italian". I love that.
9. Gumbo Shop: deep in the French Qtr., so a little hard to get to if you aren't staying there (ironically, it can be easier to pass through the Qtr. to the Marigny than get to someplace in the middle of the Qtr.), but I've heard they have the best gumbo in a town devoted to it.
10. Café Degas in Bayou St. John: I like a nice French meal every now and then.
