Default Best films of 2011

What were your favorites?

1. Melancholia
Best actress. Visually captivating. Lars best film by far

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzD0U841LRM

2. Beginners
This is a really great film if you missed it. The soundtrack? Perfect!
Melanie Laurent? Mouthwatering!
Its funny, sad, and romantic all at the same time.
I enjoyed this film probably more than any.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXUFUp6vsxg

3. Blue Valentine (wide release 2011)
Two of the best "young" actors working today.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYgr_iGATB4

4. Tree of Life

Love it or hate it,
it should be praised for its accomplishments.
Then again l Love Terrence Malick.
The cinematography with Austin and Houston used
as the setting was just breathtaking at times.

5. Shame

Two Words.
Carey Mulligan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXRYA1dxP_0

6. The Guard

Hilarious. Completely Unconventional.
The accents are pretty thick at times though.

7. The Future

Strangely beautiful!

Never saw any of the op's suggestions, don't think I ever even heard of them. But planet of the apes was good. Cant remember many of the others. I am looking forward to the new aliens movie.

The OP must be a Sundance voter or something...only two of these movies made a profit, and almost all of them opened on ten screens or less here in the US...why not just list the Best Czechoslovakian Films of 2011, you'll get as many comments...

Shame was outstanding. And you're so right about Carey.

The Guard with Don Cheadle and Brendan Gleeson, who's character is an avid hobby man, was probably my fave.

I know you have to try hard to keep your crown as "village idiot" especially with so much competition on this forum, but when did "profit" and "screenings" equate to good films? Isn't that why a large majority of award winners get re-released around this time of year. Hey, I have no issues with people who really enjoyed X-Men. To me that is sort of questionable, but hey, to each his own. And for the record, "awards" shouldn't = amazing films either. I have yet to see 50/50, but I certainly will when it comes out on blu-ray/ondemand.

Drive and The Ides of March should be on the list as well.

Has anybody seen Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy yet? It might be a bit underwhelming for a US audience, but is ingrained into the British culture, through book and tv adaptations.

I saw it on a flight, but that is heavily cut so want to view it again.
