Default Clear mobile hotspot experiences/opinions

iPhone contract is up, not renewing because I have a phone through work. I'm thinking of basically using iPhone as an iPod touch but don't want to depend on free wifi. Anyone have any experience with Clear brand mobile hotspot? Just wondering how their coverage is around DFW.

I live in Houston and when I visit Dallas (galleria area) it works fine. Been with Clear for a year and half now no problems.

Works well in Grapevine, sketchy in Flower Mound and nonexistent in Sanger. Seems to do well in major population centers but not in the sticks.

Just dropped my Verizon hotspot for Clear and way better speed. Works great in the Mid-Cities area.

Clear is good most places I have used it in (DFW, Houston and Midland). I have had little problems here and there. Not really good for Skype or Facetime type things.. but basic internet use...just fine.

You can activate an iPad sim and stick it in the iPhone. Can use anywhere an iPhone can. You can also set up a voice over ip phone number and have phone service.

There are directions on the Internet.

$15 a month for 250mb. $25 for 2 gb

Use it daily for SKYPE and have excellent reception BUT only when I have 3 or 4 bars/lights out of five. (signal strength indicator). Reception has been dependent on my location within Grapevine.

It has sucked for me, most every time I try to use it for that... maybe its just my location?

YEP, Same principle as real estate....Location, location, location or applied to Clear/Skype, that translates to signal strength. Had mixed/marginal results in the marina slip with a tin roof (2 bar signal, sometimes 3) but now out of the water for houseboat repairs, not under cover and about 100 feet higher getting 3 and normally 4 bars with crystal clear calls.

go to www.freedompop.com

I use it on a daily basis. First 500mb is free, and each GB thereafter is only $10.00.

Buy the hotspot wifi device for around $50 or less to get the free 500mb per month free. Have been using it for over 5 months now with no problem. Was on Clear network, but hear that they are now using Sprint's network, so they have expanded coverage. The also have the Freedomphone now.

I started with a Clear mobile hotspot (WiMax) and it was very unpredictable. I spent a lot of time on the phone with customer service. I can't recommend it.

Currently I'm using a T-Mobile mobile hotspot (not LTE). It has been more consistent and much faster. Same price.

I will soon be upgrading to an LTE mobile hotspot, likely T-Mobile.

Clear is VERY line-of-sight. If you can't see a Clear tower from one or two stories above your location, you're not going to get a signal (room in the middle of a hotel=no signal, room with a window=signal). To see if you'll get a signal, check their signal coverage map. It is very accurate. If you're not spending most of your time in the dark green WiMax coverage areas, then I wouldn't get Clear. If you are in their coverage area, then it's a great service. Fast speeds (5-25 Mbps) and unlimited data.
