I'll be visiting Rio and Sao Paolo for the World Cup. Any basic guidelines on hobbying in Brazil would be appreciated such as:

Where do you find providers if you don't speak much portugese - internet sites? neighborhoods? escort services? etc

What are the general costs?

What are the safety issues?

Any info like this would help.

First on cost. For the World Cup they have probably tripled or quadrupled. For everything.

Safety issues are, you are find if you don't act like a dumb shit tourist. Keep money and valuables out of sight. Don't wear expensive watches and stuff. Don't carry an expensive camera around your neck. During the day it is fine to walk anywhere but at night take a taxi everywhere. In Rio for hobbying go to a terma. Lots more fun with a great selection of girls. My favorite is Centaruous but I hear that Monte Carlo has really picked up since the closing of L'Uomo. Downtown 4 x 4 is the king. Not every taxi driver knows where everything is but all taxi drivers know where Centaruous is. Just get in and tell them "Centaruous". Note also if that if you really click with a girl at a terma she will gladly give you her number and come over when she is off either before or after her shift. Escort agencies are find but the issue is finding one that speaks English. My suggestion is to join www.clubhombre.com and read the trip reports and find B'Wana Dick's Guide To Rio that is on that site.

Just got back from Rio.. so can share some of my experience:
There are these 'strip clubs' on the north end of copacabana that are basically pick up joints. I went to a couple. One was called Sensoo and the other was Barbarella. Both of them pretty much operated similarly. There is an entry fee of 60 to 70 R (~30USD). Once you enter, you see a whole bunch of girls. You talk to them and negotiate a rate. At Sensoo, we were able to negotiate a rate of about 200R per hour and at Barbarella, we had to pay nearly 300R per hour, but that was a saturday night and I'm not sure if that was why it was more expensive. Sensoo had the option of going to an upstairs room in the club itself, but I'd recommend against doing that. These girls will come to your hotel or apartment for the same rate and the experience is a lot better in your own space. Both places had a fee for taking the girls out... ranges from 70 to 100R to take the girls out. And then you get in a taxi and take them home.. Girls from both places were amazing service.. you can then get their numbers and call them off hours (they are apparently supposed to report to the clubs between the hours of 10pm to 2am or so). If you can get them without going to the club, you save the club entry fee and the other fees associated with taking girls out from there. We repeatedly called a couple of girls for just 200R (~100USD) in the afternoons and evenings. Very good experience and pretty cheap compared to the US.
We also saw the ''brothels' like Centaurus, but did not try them. So no experience with those ones. Also, I think these prices I mentioned are the world cup higher prices and it may drop further after the peak season is done. Hope this helps.

At those two clubs it is best to get a girl late. If you take a girl early she will not stay long because she will go back to pick up another customer. If you pick one up late she will stay the night a lot of times because she does not have to go back. I like Balconey bar myself. I don't go to places where you have to pay to take the girl out. Too many places where you can pick up girls for no fee

Are there "termas" / spa style places in São Paulo like there are in Rio? I've been here in São Paulo for 2 weeks and haven't really seen any, but then again... I haven't really looked as I've been staying with a local and picking up regular girls is like shooting fish in a small stocked pond.

In Rio next week for 4 days, then back to São Paulo for 2 weeks.

All of these links are dead...they were clearly just for the World Cup.

Also, Balcony in Rio has been closed since just before the WC too; the action has moved east across the road into the tunnel. Not as fun, and not as full of hot women (or ladyboys, if that's your thing). If you're going for the summer Games don't get your hopes up...you'll have to do some scouting or go to the termas.
