Default What the HELL is this? Ballot boxes burned in three states!

This is heatbreaking.

They'll catch this lunatic pretty soon. Hope this doesn't become a 2024 thing.

Ballot boxes burned, hundreds of votes destroyed in Washington, Oregon arson cases
Two arsons occurred at ballot drop boxes 15 miles from each other on Monday morning in Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington. The fires come with just about a week before the election.

Two ballot boxes were burned in Washington and Oregon on Monday, possibly damaging hundreds of mail-in votes with only about a week to go before Election Day.

The Portland Police Bureau responded to reports of a fire in the Buckman neighborhood of the city at about 3:30 a.m. The fire had been extinguished by security personnel who work in the area, and officers soon found an "incendiary device," characterizing the crime as arson.

The Vancouver Police Department in nearby southern Washington said in a statement that they responded to an arson at a ballot box at 4 a.m. They found smoke coming out of the box and a "suspicious object" next to it.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement to USA TODAY that it is "coordinating with federal, state and local partners to actively investigate the two incidents." The FBI declined to comment on whether the arsons would be investigated as a domestic terror incident in a follow-up email.

First responders pull out the burning contents of a ballot box, used to collect early votes ahead of the Nov. 5 U.S. election, after it was set on fire in a suspected arson in Vancouver, Washington, U.S. October 28, 2024 in a still image from video.
Hundreds of ballots damaged in Washington, damage limited in Portland

Clark County auditor Greg Kimsey said that a large number of ballots had been destroyed in the Vancouver fire.

"We are still in the process of coming up with a closer number, but it certainly was hundreds," Kimsey said.

Kimsey said that the fire suppression system in the Vancouver ballot box did not work. KATU-TV reported that the last pick-up from the ballot box occurred at 11 a.m. Saturday.

USA TODAY was reaching out to Kimsey to find out what the city plans to do about the lost votes.

Multnomah County election official Tim Scott said in a joint press conference that only three ballots had been destroyed in the Portland fire and that those voters would be contacted.

The boxes that were burned are located about 15 miles away from each and police officials said that they believe the arsons are connected.

Second ballot box arson in Vancouver, Washington

Vancouver police said that Monday's arson was similar to one that occurred Oct. 8 before ballots were being mailed, according to The Oregonian.

The Vancouver ballot box is located in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, where Democratic House Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez is attempting to retain her seat, which she won by less than 3,000 votes in 2022 against Republican challenger Joe Kent.

Both candidates condemned the arsons on Monday.

"Southwest Washington cannot risk a single vote being lost to arson and political violence," Gluesenkamp Perez said in a statement obtained by The Oregonian.

"Stay focused on driving voter turn out & early voting, don’t be deterred from voting by a cowardly act of terrorism," Kent said on X.

Hundreds of ballots may have been destroyed in Washington, while a fire suppressant protected most of the ballots in Portland.

LOL. Like “magas” would burn mailboxes in the coastal northwest. What’s Harris up by there, 40? Yeah, burning mailbox will definitely tighten the race. The perpetrators here are much more likely to have purple hair and pierced scrotums.

I would never ever put a ballot in a box like this without security around it.

It is part of the Democrats war Democracy, as they challenge states like Virginia to put non citizens on the voter rolls.

Battlespace preparation for the coming election loss.

If Democrats fear getting swamped during the election, claims like this will be used to say that Trump stole the election through fraud.

Raskin has already said that Trump will be kept from taking office regardless of whether he wins or not.

I've said it before but we're about to see some of the worst violence since the 1960s. The St. George FLoyd riots are going to pale in comparison.

Straight out the Democrat playbook in 2020. Ballots "misprinted" so they had to remail millions of ballots. 2024 no way to know which ballots were burned so millions we be remailed and no duplicates removed.

Yikes!

I do not endorse, support or encourage any sort of ballot destruction or any other form of election rigging.

But then, this is the home town of peaceful arson proteas and rioting.

With that admittedly cynical remark out of my system: The perpetrators of this election atrocity should be pursued, charged, prosecuted, convicted and punished severely.

As usual, you’re wrong. The districts where the ballot boxes were burned are close congressional races.

Thank you for that clarification . . .what does that tell us about the perpetrators, their intent and p[urpose?

Can anything be gleaned from surveillance video and/or cell phone tracking as has been done in the past?

This should be of equal concern (bi-partisan) for election advocates on both sides. Has either candidate in these "close" districtys put up a reward?

Wrong. You’re looking for ny excuse to push that fascistic fear and smear line.

This thread has nothing to do with any of that stuff. Hijack a different one, “stud.”

I was first able to vote in 1972. Over the years, it has become my opinion that we, a a nation, need a more uniform farmwork for structuring our voting process.

This would require one or more amendments to the Constitution to accomplish.

I am not deeply schooled in the derails of the Constitution, but I would hope that some indirect action by congress might incentivize the separate states to follow a more uniform process of registering voters, collecting ballots and counting the votes.

Back in the 1970s, congress coherence the states to enact uniformly reduced speed limits all the way down to 55 MPH. There may also be a way to get the states to conform to a national set of election practices without engaging in a protracted amendment process.

We all can argue over and otherwise negotiate the details.
