CNN’s ratings crater: Viewership at three-year low, down 26% from 2018

The bottom has fallen out on CNN’s ratings, according to the latest viewership numbers.

Nielsen Media Research released its April ratings for the cable news network and CNN’s ratings fell 26% from the same month a year ago. This month is CNN’s worst ratings since October 2015.

CNN also lost views in the key advertising demographic of 25-54 year olds. CNN finished the month with an average of 767,000 viewers during their prime-time lineup. It had only 198,000 viewers in the key 25-54 year old demographic down from 336,000 a year ago.

Fox News finished first in the news race with 2.4 million viewers, the same number of viewers they had a year ago.

The five most-watched shows in cable news were Fox's "Hannity" with an average of 3.086 million viewers, "Tucker Carlson Tonight" with 2.834 million, MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow Show" with 2.630 million, Fox's "The Ingraham Angle" with 2.455 million viewers, and Fox's "The Five" with 2.4 million.

CNN's best-viewed show was "Chris Cuomo Primetime," which averaged 917,000 viewers and was 26th overall in total viewers among the cable news networks.

April 2019 Ratings: MSNBC Is Still the Second-Most-Watched Cable Network, But It’s Also Way Down From Last Year

https://www.adweek.com/tvnewser/apri...t-year/401256/

By A.J. Katz on Apr. 30, 2019 - 4:29 PMComment

Across all of cable TV, MSNBC remained the second-most-watched network in total day and in prime time, and is touting its victories over CNN in total audience. April 2019 marked the 19th month in a row that MSNBC beat CNN in total viewers during dayside, the 27th consecutive month it beat CNN in prime time and the 26th month in a row that it finished ahead in total day viewers.

The NBC-owned cable news network also beat CNN in the prime time demo for the third consecutive month, thanks to its progressive-skewing programming. But it’s not often that the network is able to match CNN in the demo across the 6 a.m. – 6 a.m. total day. The network accomplished the feat in April for the first time since 2014, matching CNN with a 141,000 A25-54 viewer average. We use the term “feat” loosely. Both networks lost a chunk of their respective A25-54 audience base this month vs. April 2018. CNN’s loss was just more severe than MSNBC’s.

MSNBC’s No. 2 ranking across cable TV might sound great, but the network has been losing a significant number of what had been a massive audience over the past couple of years.

In April 2019, MSNBC was -14% in prime time viewers, -9 percent in total day viewers. The A25-54 drop off was worse: -36% in prime time and -34% in total day vs. the network’s April 2018 audience delivery.

The average impressions for April 2019 (Nielsen Live + Same Day data):
  • Prime time (Mon-Sun): 1,660,000 total viewers / 255,000 A25-54
  • Total Day (Mon-Sun): 919,000 total viewers / 141,000 A25-54
Rachel Maddow finished the month as MSNBC’s top show (no shocker), and was No. 3 across all of cable news, behind both Hannity and Tucker Carlson. All In With Chris Hayes beat AC360 across the board for the second consecutive month.

Morning Joe beat CNN for the 50th consecutive month in total viewers.

he 11th Hour with Brian Williams is the only show that has been beating Fox News with any sort of consistency in a relevant category. The 11th Hour defeated Fox News @ Night with Shannon Bream in total viewers for the second consecutive month (though he trailed her in the demo). The 11th Hour has also now defeated CNN in total viewers for 33 straight months.

Maddow, other MSNBC hosts see ratings drop, Fox up

By DAVID BAUDER March 27, 2019

NEW YORK (AP) — Rachel Maddow isn’t backing away from her coverage of President Donald Trump and any connection to Russia’s involvement in trying to influence the 2016 presidential campaign. The question is how much her fans want to listen.

Maddow’s audience has dipped on her two days back on the air since Attorney General William Barr reported that special counsel Robert Mueller had found no collusion between Trump and Russia’s efforts. Her audience of 2.5 million on Monday was 19 percent below her average this year, and it went down further to 2.3 million on Tuesday, the Nielsen company said.

Meanwhile, her head-to-head competitor on Fox News Channel, Sean Hannity, saw his audience soar on Monday to 4 million viewers, a 32 percent increase from his average. It slipped to 3.57 million on Tuesday. One of Trump’s most prominent media fans, Hannity was to interview the president on Wednesday’s show.

Hannity and Maddow have run neck-and-neck atop the cable news ratings this year, with Maddow having the slight edge.

Fox’s Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham also saw their audiences top their averages both days, while other prime-time hosts on MSNBC and CNN saw their audiences plunge.

The phenomenon isn’t unusual; political camps are more interested in watching news when it reflects well on their favorites, and vice versa. Maddow’s ratings dropped sharply in the immediate aftermath of the 2016 election, as many fans of Hillary Clinton couldn’t bring themselves to watch the news after Trump’s victory, but eventually rebounded. Similarly, Hannity saw some ratings weakness late last year as bad news piled up for Trump.

Maddow has been the most visible television personality taking on Trump during Mueller’s probe, her reports methodical and detailed. As a result, she’s a target of Trump supporters seeking vindication. The New York Post compiled a mock “Mueller Madness” bracket of Trump critics with Maddow the top-seeded cable news figure, and the chart was retweeted Wednesday by White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

Maddow devoted virtually all of Monday’s show to what she’s calling the “Barr Report,” listing a series of questions she wanted to pose. About half of Tuesday’s show was on the investigation.

She hasn’t engaged her critics, but fellow MSNBC personality Joe Scarborough took them on in an angry monologue on Wednesday.

He wondered aloud what journalists were supposed to do for the past two years as stories piled up about Trump and associates misleading Americans about contacts to Russians. He said he wasn’t just unhappy about political critics, but also some in the media who are “hand-wringing” about the amount of coverage.

He criticized unnamed people who had “sold their soul to a personality cult.”

And he promised that MSNBC wouldn’t abandon the story.

“We’re not going to divert our eyes,” he said. “Damn the torpedoes. Full steam ahead. Follow the story where it leads us.”

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Falls Into Fifth Place in July Ratings Report

By Randy Hall |

August 2, 2019 7:52 AM EDT

Sixteen months ago, The Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC surpassed the ratings of rival Sean Hannity on the Fox News Channel, and people wondered if the liberal network might actually replace the top-rated TV news source.
That situation has changed dramatically, and on Tuesday, the Nielsen company released ratings for July, in which Hannity was declared the top-rated program in cable news for the fourth month in a row while Maddow slid to fifth place in the 9 p.m. time slot.

In an article posted by Mark Joyella, the senior media contributor for Forbes magazine declared:
It's been more than a year since MSNBC's star host Rachel Maddow beat Fox News Channel's top-rated host Sean Hannity to take the title of most-watched host in all of cable news.

At the time, March 2018, The Rachel Maddow Show finished in first place with an average total audience of 3.058 million viewers -- the show's best-ever performance in the 9 p.m. ET hour.
Over at Deadline.com, writer Dominic Patten, stated, “MSNBC's ratings had been climbing, up 30 percent in the first quarter of 2018, while ratings for FNC and CNN were down.”

However, during the next six months, Hannity “pushed Maddow out of first place” even though “there seemed to be a refreshed competition between the two prime-time hosts.”

But last month, Maddow had a total audience of just 2.5 million, which is far behind Hannity’s viewership of 3.3 million.

The FNC boost also benefited other weekday shows, including Tucker Carlson Tonight, which was watched by 3.1 million, The Ingraham Angle with 2.5 million and The Five (also 2.5 million).

Joyella added that the five top cable news shows finished in the same order among viewers from 25 to 54 years of age, the demographic group most valued by advertisers. Hannity drew a total audience in the demo of 527,000 viewers, and Maddow was well behind with 384,000.

“It's the first time since October 2018 that Maddow has finished outside the top three cable news shows among total viewers,” the Forbes contributor noted, while “Fox News posted its 37 straight monthly first-place finish.

Back at Deadline.com, Patten noted that “July was not a good month overall for the NBCUniversal-owned MSNBC.”

“First,” Patten noted, “top-rated Maddow was down in a month that launched with the outlet hosting the first round of Democratic presidential debates.”

He continued: “MSNBC had its least watched month among the 25-54s since the former Celebrity Apprentice host moved into the White House in January 2017 -- and that’s with Robert Mueller’s much-hyped congressional hearings on July 24.”

As NewsBusters noted in late March, Maddow’s ratings have been in freefall since Mueller’s report didn’t produce any charges against Trump -- despite her constant efforts to twist anything in the news on the GOP official using her many “conspiracy theories.”

When discussing poor ratings, it’s difficult to ignore CNN’s recent collapse. In July, the network’s New Day morning program had its worst month in the key demo in five years. Neverthless, Patten was able to find a silver lining in all the bad news: “[I]n the battle between that top cable newsers that aren’t owned by an Australian mogul, MSNBC beat CNN for the 29th month in a row in total day viewers."

Yeah the bachelor reference is kind of out of "left" field, but I would expect that.

However, The shows being discussed from the likes of Hannity, Maddow, Carlson, Cuomo, Ingraham, Matthews, etc. are not
really NEWS either.

They are all slanted political punditry with bits of news slipped in.
