Lets find out!! Let'em all go down. That would get them out from under all the ridiculous union contracts they've had forced down their throats. They could then come back as much more competitive and profitable entities, thus selling more vehicles and creating more jobs. Sounds incredibly simple to me...

Im not making an argument for the UAW, the question is could they COME BACK after (IMO) a 90 day shut down at least ? granted the inventory yards have some available units but after the car guys got caught with tens of thousands of new cars sitting idle in yards all over the country a couple of years ago chances are they wont make that mistake again ...

could very well turn into a RUT ROW moment ...

Yes, it might be a RUH ROW moment...but only a moment. If it is 90 days, that really isn't that long in the big scheme of things. But I think we would all be amazed at how fast the automakers could ramp up production in non-union states where they already have a presence, (i.e.- Alabama, Texas, Tennessee, S. Carolina, etc.), and cover any shortfall fairly quickly.

Gotta think long-term on this stuff. That's the problem with 90% of the issues we discuss on this board and others. Fiscal cliff, entitlement spending, immigration, you name it, nobody has the gonads to push legitimate solutions that actually fix something. They're too busy protecting their little fiefdoms and accumulating power, like Beohner right now and Obama voters a month ago. Not going to have real progress until everybody grows up and quits being so selfish.

Speaking of Chevy, I saw something last week that I have never seen before...a Chevy Volt actually on the street running. It was at the corner of Quivera and 87th street. It even had a bumper sticker that said "GM is alive and Bin Laden is dead". I think they come with the car.

Probably not all that long.

In 1984, as I recall, the machinists union contract came up for renewal at General Dynamics/Fort Worth Division. The union wasn't happy with GD/FW's offer, and voted to strike. The first day was UGLY, and I wasn't completely sure it would be safe to drive in the second. (Luckily, AFL/CIO national HQ sent in some consultants, who had a fast, serious, heart-to-heart talk with the local union leaders about proper behavior during a strike, and things settled down.)

They had one hell of a party for about two weeks. Then the first paycheck didn't arrive, and the union rank-and-file members realized just how much lower the union's "strike pay" was from their regular paychecks. I think the new contract was approved the next day.

The United Auto Workers brass will scream bloody murder. The rank-and-file members won't take long to figure out that building cars, even as nonunion labor, pays a lot better than unemployment and strike pay.
