Thanks. I tried Wikipedia & Urban Dictionary, but got no hits. Still not sure how this definition applies to De Santis statement: “The last thing we need to do is monkey this up trying to embrace a socialist agenda.”
He seems to imply that electing Gillum would mess/screw/"monkey" things up.Ah well, it is what it is. Thanks for the help.

All that's important is that it is out there and people other than this candidate do use it. I've used it on occasion myself as a variation of "muck it up" which I use quite often.
