Movie Collection...my other hobby
Ladies and Gents,
I need a little help here....and maybe this will spawn some good film discussion. This may seem like small potatoes to some, and others may think that I am a freak; however, I am a movie dork, and am in the process of breaking 300 total movies in my collection. I need a good list of 40 more movies to make this happen. My taste is extensive, and I will watch just about anything once. What movies have you seen, heard about, or own yourself that you would recommend to someone looking to hit a small hobby milestone. Here are the only rules:
It must be considered a full length film. Simply put...anything that can be considered a movie!

Before you collect too many more, there are two things to consider:
- Capturing what movies you have in a database. I've used DVD Proviler (dvdprofiler.com) for years but there are other choices. What I really like about DVD Profiler is that it supports bar code entry, so takes just a few seconds to enter new DVDs into the database (also real handy to audit 1200+ DVDs ). An online list of what movies you have and an iPhone to view them while in the store is real handy to avoid duplicates.
- Purchasing one or more 2 TB drives to back up the DVDs to (transcoding using HandBrake optional). Then you can easily select and view using XBMC (on your linux, mac, or windows box). This is real sweet when you dedicate a machine to be your home theater PC connected to your 60" plasma 1080p TV and your AV receiver for kick ass surround sound. The DVD upscaling to 1080p is pretty good now a days.
If you are just wanting to flush out your library, I recommend hitting the $5 bin at Walmart every week or two.
Also decide up front if you want widescreen or not, then get in the habit of double checking the available formats on the DVD when purchasing it.

If you don't share my penchant for sci-fi, zombies or musicals, you probably won't find much to like in my list (I'll leave out the zombie flicks since that seems to be pretty niche). In no particular order:
Blade Runner
Total Recall
Minority Report
A Clockwork Orange
2001: A Space Odyssey
Planet of the Apes (1968)
The Ten Commandments
Ben-Hur
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
It's A Wonderful Life
Harvey
Life is Beautiful
Singin' in the Rain (and virtually anything else Gene Kelly appeared in)
The Silence of the Lambs
Memento
Pi
American History X
Amadeus
Metropolis
The Cell
The Fall (Tarsem Singh's visuals are... beyond description)
Time Bandits
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Brazil
Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
The Fifth Element
The Wall
Gattaca
The Fountain
Dark City
Twelve Monkeys
THX 1138
Serenity

The Longest Day would be my recommendation for the quintessential, classic war film.

If you are close to 300 movies, I'll try to name recent movies, assuming that you already have most of what I'd recommend. I just recently saw Moon, with Sam Rockwell.

Speaking of Sam Rockwell, allot of people forgot about Confession of a Dangerous Mind. Great cast and unique style.

I know someone else already mentioned it, but Hurt Locker was another good one that I saw, recently.

Hurt Locker really suprised me. It is honestly the best movie I have seen on the subject of the Iraq/Afganistan conflicts. It is not very political at all, it is just about a guy doing his job in the Army.
It seems like so many of the movies on this subject in the last few years have been heavily influenced by either side of the political viewpoints on the wars. This one really allows you to connect with the soldiers and get a glimpse into what they do, and it isn't about WHY they are there.
