Default A Bow to the Bard of Avon

I've been looking for inspiration in some strange places recently, and ran across some timeless quotes from Will Shakespeare who was an excellent scholar of the human condition. While completely out of character for me, I plan on seeing one of his plays soon.

Here are a few of his quotes which seem applicable to ECCIE:

"How far that little candle throws its beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world." -Martian Man's post

"Sweet are the uses of adversity,
Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous,
Wears yet a precious jewel in his head;
And this our life, exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in every thing.
"
-This is not the Real World, but closer to nature

"The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose." -unfair banishments or threats of banning

"Talking isn't doing. It is a kind of good deed to say well; and yet words are not deeds." -might apply to some SDs

"The fool doth think he is wise, but the wise man knows himself to be a fool.." -A little humility can allow me to become a better person.

Does anyone have any Shakespeare trivia or favorite quotes?

I am hoping that Knotty Man and David Douchehurst chime in.

"Methinks the Lady doth protest too much!"

Actually I think it might be interesting if some would write their reviews in his style.

"She sucketh greatly!"

Thou rascal beadle, hold thy bloody hand.
Why dost thou lash that whore? Strip thine own back.
Thou hotly lust’st to use her in that kind
For which thou whipp’st her. The usurer hangs the cozener.-King Lear

TRANSLATION:
You stupid cop, stop your violence! Why are you whipping that whore? You should be whipping yourself, since you lust after her and yearn to do the same thing for which you’re punishing her. One criminal punishes another.

In 15 years no one has ever commented on my corruption of that Richard the Third line.

I'm glad Ms Valentina included the NASCAR translation of the quote. I wonder if Shakespeare were alive today would he be in advertising?

How would he text? 2b r nt 2b, tht's ?....

"brevity is the soul of wit"

Loxly, Your signature line is why I thought there might be interest here during Shakespeare's birthday... I guess not.

“A friend is one who knows who you are, understands where you have
been, accepts what you have become, and still gently
allows you to grow.”

Ha! Did you say NASCAR translation?? hahaha! Though I know the Shakepeare quote by heart, I had to steal the translation from the internet. My own would have been a 12 page dissertation!

Here's another goodie from his sonnet 66 which could be applicable today. Shakespeare is indeed evergreen and contemporary.

Tired with all these, for restful death I cry,
As, to behold desert a beggar born,
And needy nothing trimm'd in jollity,
And purest faith unhappily forsworn,
And gilded honour shamefully misplaced,
And maiden virtue rudely strumpeted,
And right perfection wrongfully disgraced,
And strength by limping sway disabled,
And art made tongue-tied by authority,
And folly doctor-like controlling skill,
And simple truth miscall'd simplicity,
And captive good attending captain ill:
Tired with all these, from these would I be gone,
Save that, to die, I leave my love alone.

If reviews were done in Elizabethan English:

"She was a right good sausage pocket"
"I do not know to which I take the greater offense, the fore or aft of her."
"She that flesh gobbling fustilarian"
"She was a Spanish pouch of a mongrel bitch."
"She lards the lean earth as she walks along."
"She is spread of late into a goodly bulk"

Okay okay, I can do this forever.

I found some ad hoc quotes to go with my pic below

'I've lately had two spiders Crawling upon my startled hopes-- Now though thy friendly hand has brushed 'em from me, Yet still they crawl offensive to mine eyes: I would have some kind friend to tread upon 'em.'

'Alack, for lesser knowledge! how accursed
In being so blest! There may be in the cup
A spider steep'd, and one may drink, depart,
And yet partake no venom, for his knowledge
Is not infected: but if one present
The abhorr'd ingredient to his eye, make known
How he hath drunk, he cracks his gorge, his sides,
With violent hefts. I have drunk,
and seen the spider.'
=<ignorance is bliss>

I think this guy was out looking for some hoochie. He passed my door tonight and was headed north.
