there are several who want to continue the US presence in the middle east. Israel for one, but mainly because they find themselves surrounded by enemies. Saudi Arabia, who despite their wealth does not have a large army. they want the US there to protect them from Iran.

Jordan wants the US in the middle east. not that they need our involvement directly but they'll take whatever help they can get.

If Obama wasn't prepared to DO anything to overthrow Assad, he should have kept his mouth shut. Instead, both he and Hillary loudly proclaimed "Assad must go" soon after the Arab Spring protests started in Syria back in 2011. They expected the protesters to push him out, because well, that's the way it unfolded in Tunisia, right? This is what happens when naive libtard/progressives try to position themselves to be on the "right side of history" but lack the understanding, the diplomatic dexterity and the will to shape that history. Five years and numerous flouted "red lines" later, Assad is still in power, the Russians are back in the Middle East, and US credibility is shot to hell.
