More money for the ladies less to the cable guy.

We all want to hobby as much as we can, and not all of us are independently wealthy. However, I found a simple way to save some
cash.

Everyone is familiar with the "cord cutting" craze and I most recently told Comcast see ya and no I didn't get satellite. I spent a few weeks researching and thought I would pass on the info.

Most of the newer tvs are of the "smart" variety and offer streaming content. I upgraded my TV at Christmas and it will soon pay for itself.

If your tv allows streaming then follow these steps.

1. Don't skimp on the home internet, this is the only service I have from Comcast. However, the basic works just fine so no need to pay the extra $30 for the "Blast" Internet. Also, save up and when you can, buy your own modem. Buying your modem can save you ($200 a year in rental fees).

2. Make sure your tv has some sort of streaming device. My new one has a Roku built in, but you can get a Roku basic for $30 and install is a sinch. Just plug into an HDMI outlet.

2. For your local stations you have 2 options. A lot of people buy the new Hi-definition tv antennas. However, this will only get you your local stations and in MS that's not much.

2a. I opted for Hulu with live tv. It gives me plenty of channels (all the ones I would watch on cable) Hulu's original content, and you can ad a premium channel such as HBO for extra WITHOUT ANY ADDITIONAL equipment and it includes a 50 hour cloud based DVR. There are other options such as SlingTV, DirectTV Now, and Youtube has a service (but not in Hattiesburg). So you need to research which one is best for you. The good news is most will have a free trial with your Roku.

So how is this hobby related you ask, with some money spent on the front end, I am now Comcast free and saving significantly on my cable TV bill and no loss of service. Therefore more $ for hobbying with the ladies.

Just the "fees" Comcast charges were $35-40 a month.

And as a bonus there is an ap that lets you stream from your phone to your tv. So I have watched porn on a 55" tv lol.

I "cut the cord" months ago. The only thing that I use the cable company for now is internet service. I have Hulu and Netflix and a digital antennae that I received for a Christmas gift. Even with internet and subscriptions to both Hulu and Netflix, I'm still saving $85 a month. With the digital antennae, I can pick up a couple of the major stations and PBS. With all that, it's all I need.

I was going to get cable awhile back but they were so ugly to me, I told them to keep their damn services. I have internet so I can play my video games and watch Netflix.. I don’t even want cable.

If you do a lot of streaming, they may charge you a lot of extra money for the extra bandwithyou are using. The basic interent service has a lot less bandwith usage than the higher speed. So they will most likely charge you for it or slow down (throttle) your speed until the next month. I have sort of the basic internet and I pay $55 a month. But I don't stream anything, just a tv show every once in awhile. You might want to check with them to see what happens if you go over and what it would cost.

Cravin, good point and I did some research. Comcast lets you stream a terabyte of data a month. The article I found said that you could watch all 52 episodes on "House of Cards" in the same month and use about 50% of that. Comcast originally limited to 300MB but pressure from the FTC made them triple it.

HA i used to work for mediacom , and they dont charge you extra for extra bandwith usage , if my memory services me , it has been about a year

That is great that you can do that much streaming without any overage. I'm on Cableone. So I don't know how much I could do. Unfortunately I can't do streaming right now as my main means of TV. So I use Directv. I always get them to lower my bill once a year to under $85. Otherwise it would be over $115.

CableOne here as well. They auto-upgraded me after going over their 300gb/month limit for their basic speed. Now I pay an extra $30 a month ($90 total) for a 600gb limit. It sucks we only have cableone and ATT as an option down here...
