I'm speaking from personal firsthand experience here.
Several years ago, on my way to Austin to visit the family for Christmas, I broke a bone in my foot on the way out the door. ER said there was no reason I couldn't travel, but get an orthopedic doc to look at the foot as soon as I could. It required surgery, and I had a better support network in Austin than I did where I was living at the time, so I had the surgery done in Austin and did the recovery in Austin, while working from home there.
One day, out of cabin fever, I went down to the Yellow Rose for a while. There was someone forgettable on the upstairs stage, and there were these two cuties on the downstairs stage. After watching them for a bit, I figured out that one of them, a SERIOUSLY hot Asian, was teaching the other the basics of pole tricks.
On a what-the-heck basis, I walked over and asked the Asian what her name was. She got this very surprising scared-to-death deer-in-the-headlights look, and said a stage name. I'd conditioned a reflex, for this kind of situation: When a dancer gives me an obvious stage name, I ask "Real name?" and I SHUT UP. (This quickly separates the ones who are strictly in it for the money from the ones who are worth knowing. In my opinion.) She instantly busted out this DAZZLING million-watt smile, stuck her hand out, said a different name, and we were off to the races. We chatted most of the afternoon and had a great time. No, no dances, no attempts at OTC, but we did trade contact information.
Eventually, I headed for home. Her stage name rang a bell, vaguely, and I did the obligatory Google search once I got home, and THAT'S when I (a) learned that I'd just spent a very enjoyable afternoon chatting with "Lily Thai", the (at that time retired) porn star, and (b) understood where that deer-in-the-headlights look had come from. She KNEW what the usual reaction from guys was when she told them she was Lily Thai, the porn star.
We stayed friends for some years. Eventually we drifted out of touch (but see below), but not before she treated a different club to the vision of her CLIMBING OVER THE BAR to kiss me goodnight one night, when she was tending bar in a place off Congress Avenue and I managed to make it into town on a night when she was working and I knew where.
And that would have been the end of the story, except.
A few years ago, I was in Austin for a weekend for a get-together with some other friends. I'd heard she was dancing at the Yellow Rose, and I stopped in to inquire. Yes, she was there. The waitress pointed her out to me. She was busy at that moment, talking with a table full of guys. I asked the waitress to chase her over my way when she got finished with them, and sat back and relaxed.
Eventually, she wrapped things up with them, stood up, turned around, and headed in my direction. About ten feet away from me, she stopped dead in her tracks, got this SHOCKED look on her face, SCREAMED my name, and was in my lap and wrapping my arms around herself, then wrapping her arms around me, within what felt like less than one second! I would have sworn that she TELEPORTED from there to here.
Unfortunately, I lost touch with her. Pity. I personally would enjoy seeing her again.
