'We Need the President's Help': Amidst Violence, Chicago Dem Asks Trump to Ignore Emanuel's 'Ban'

A Democratic Illinois state lawmaker who represents part of Chicago's West Side that has been heavily impacted by an increase in shootings asked publicly on "Fox & Friends" for President Donald Trump's help.

State Representative La Shawn Ford said three of the 63 people shot over the weekend in Chicago were victimized within steps of his church.

Ford said he was not opposing Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) outright, but clarified that the president should not consider the city a "Trump-Free Zone" -- which Emanuel declared it in 2017.

"We have to make sure that President Trump recognizes that not everybody believes that Chicago is a Trump-Free Zone," Ford said.

Ford thanked Fox News analyst Gianno Caldwell, a Chicago native, for putting a spotlight on the violence in town and noted both men took part in a large rally last week to draw further attention to the shootings.

Ford said the Chicago Police Department is "not trusted, with the mass genocide that's happening in the community."

"The government allows drugs and gangs to dominate those communities [in my district]," he said. "We need the president's help in Chicago."

Ford said the U.S. sends billions of dollars to underdeveloped countries that are similarly rife with crime, but does not do the same in Chicago and elsewhere domestically.

He said Emanuel should begin working with Trump to fix the crime problem, adding that "as long as we are divided and fighting against the president, [improvement] is not going to happen."

But didn't he seek to cut funding for Chicago? Specifically the people who are right in the middle of this unreal firefight?

The violence in Chicago has to end, and the state and federal governments need to help in any way they can. Funds, yes. Human resources, yes, if necessary.

President Trump should remind Chicago that this is a local law inforcement issue. There are multitudes of State Laws that need to be enforced.

The State, and the City, have to have the will to enforce them.
