Chat and "private rooms"
Chat?
Many php sites have chat with multiple "rooms" - that is there is a primary entry "window" and the place eveyone comes in. Then there are alternate rooms that members can "move" to. I did not see any on ECCIE chat.
Is this a design decision or a design problem - that is - is it a decision of the site owners/management or an issue with the actual structure or something else?
Private Rooms?
Some php layouts allow modertors/administrator and/or members to create private rooms. Usually there require membership and moderation. In some this are visible to all members in others they are by invitation only.
I have not seen this in the member profile layout - perhaps just a missed item - I do that now and then - or the home page layout.
Again is this not an option? An option not used? Or just none o' my biz'?
Just had this question come up in KC discussions a couple of times and I was wondering if there were any answers.

Yes, most chat sites have multiple areas but the ECCIE chat area does not at this time. I do not know if that will change.

The Spider Hole is just a private forum. It is not a chat room.
That is also a topic for another thread, not this one.

Mokoa - if you check the title of the thread, it was:
Chat and "private rooms" SoI don't think he is off topic?

Not sure what a spider hole is, but I am begining to think the just none o' my biz' may be the situation? I am not speaking of hole for a spiker - what ever that may be, if it is not possible or the site owners do not allow it, or you just don;t know or just can't say - well I don't want to get you in trouble, so I would understand that a no response for you is NO and that is different than I DON'T KNOW! So thanks for the answer or the NO answer or the no answer, what ever the result may be!

Mokoa isn't off topic at all.
The Spider Hole is a separate forum and another subject for it's own thread. It's not related to chat.
For now, it isn't feasible to have more than one chat room. It would require the chat moderators to rotate. There aren't enough helpful hands to juggle all of that.
As it is, chat would need more people from various areas/interests to keep each room busy. Otherwise, they'll end up congregated in the main room with everyone anyway.
The current setup keeps it interesting with the mix of personalities and different points of view.

Hi Shea - I don't think I said he was off topic - In my title, there were two parts. 1.Chat structure 2. Private rooms
His comment was limited to part 1, I was also looking for comments on part 2. If he chooses not to comment on part 2 that is his choice, but for him to say the other poster was off topic - the comment was not off topic for part 2? YOU would disagree with that statement? My thread title did not include private rooms? What ever the spyder thing is, it is not a private room?
So, based on your comments, I would say that a "private room" would be a "seperate forum", would you disagree?

Again, my question was two part, I don't think I said a chat room was a private room - a private room would be an invite area for specific users to post and read comments.
PART 1: For example, here is a chat room with seperate "interior rooms" where those participating can have a seperate conversation on a different site.
http://www.eraps.net/misc.php?do=flashchat&room=1
Rooms include Hotel, bedroom, board room, current events and tech talk
PART 2: Here is a link to a private room on a different site which has access by seperate membership access, this one is for Meet and Greet planning.

And this answers one of my questions, it is not a design issue - it could be done, so it is a structure issue at this point.

Not sure what the average, min and max levels are in chat but when I have been there, there were enough posts so it was difficult for me to follow very many converstations with clairity - however, I DID FIND THAT I could "tap" a chatter on the "shoulder" and create a private conversation window, which I had not found before - have you ever seen/used this feature?
This is what it looks like and it did work for me to contact a couple of ladies. I have posted this in the KC Forum that is also discussing this topic

Again for those of us with more limited attention spans, it is more distracting that engaging, glad you can keep up with it all.
WHICH BRINGS me to a seperate question. IF I remember correctly, you profile status is provider and not admin? But seem to have a lot of admin info on the site. Did you help in the design stages of contruction?
I have suggested a couple of options in the KC forum if you want to look at that thread.

And thank you for the input, every little bit helps me put the puzzle together, just takes some time!

Oh I did give another option in the KC discussion that I will share her just incase you don't get a chance to look at it.
Quote:
This is available still:
http://www.wireclub.com/chat/room/kansas_city_contacts
rated adult - no membership in the room required - but you must create an account to access the site.
A Yahoo group could be created. Lots of options, if they are used. But anything offsite may be verification problems.
I have done the chat room here a couple of times and not having multiple rooms is not a good design in my personal opinion. It could be that chat is not a major area for the site owner and/or staff? Only they can tell us that. I'll ask that question at the board level and see what happens.

The chat server had to be rebooted. It's not uncommon to happen sometimes.

Mokoa was addressing the Spider Hole as being a separate subject altogether. It's not the same topic as chat which is why it should have it's own thread so everything isn't mixed together to cause confusion.
Other than all of that, I understand what you're trying to say.

No. It's a forum which can allow it to have sub forums within it.
When you say rooms, I imagine chat having more of those inside. Just like the ones you named from the other board. But as mentioned previously, there's not enough level-headed volunteers to moderate that many rooms at the same time.

"Tapping a member on the shoulder" is a private message.
Yes, I'm in chat quite often.

If you have ideas, I'm sure the site owners are receptive and may make changes. The moderators and admins can share their wisdom and their points of view but they don't have the ability to rearrange the general design of the board.
I choose to provide these days but used to moderate on the other board you gave links to for the examples. Still in close touch with some of the people and friends with a few of the moderators from this site too.
It doesn't hurt to help someone with questions so I offered a few answers.

Yes, he was off topic. The Spider Hole is a private forum. It is not a private room. You are interchanging terms which actually are not interchangeable. In my experience rooms have always been associated with chat sites. Each room being a separate place where users can chat together. These rooms are usually identified by some sort of interest or hobby or other subject. The Spider Hole is not like that at all. It is forum, not a chat room. How it works is quite different.
To answer your questions...
First, having only one room is not an issue. For now that is all there is. As I stated earlier, I know of no plans to change that.
Second, I do not know if there are any private rooms in our chat site.

This explains the different. Sorry I have never been to the Hole so I did not realize what it was or the distinction between the 2. Something was mentioned in a couple of KC forums about this hole. Based on what you have suggested, it should not have been discussed either? My apology for my error. Will not mention it here or there again.
