Default Unread PM

What happens to an "Unread PM" ? If I delete it before its read...did the recipient actually receive it?

I know a rather elementary question, but I was just curious if its in "limbo", like a cache or something until the recipient accepts it?

Im not sure what yours asking but ill take my shot at it. When you send a message and request a read receipt the recipient must acknowledge the receipt otherwise it will remain as unread. In other words in order the receipt to be acknowledged the recipient must ok it. If the person deletes it and never opens it then it stays as unread on your end.
