My ECCIE Reviews
Default Let's Talk

I just had a very interesting conversation with a friend.

I use the term "Monger" loosely I suppose.

To me a Monger means... someone that has been around the business awhile and enjoys being a part of the community. Knows the ins and outs. Is an avid hobbyist.

To my friend it seems to be a negative term. Almost predatory.

Thoughts?

I never thought the term to be negative but perhaps it is and I just didn't realize.

I choose not to use the term myself, as I think it has a slightly negative slant to the ones it's being used to label.
But, being new around here, what the hell do I know.
Interested to hear from the old guard.

A monger to me is someone who is always on the prowl. He is always looking for a day. Just a like a warmonger or gossipmonger always wanting to be caught up in gossip or fighting.

For a monger (referring to the hobby), they are in it for the chase as well as the reward.

Not a negative thing about the word to me. But again we have people these days getting offended over anything so it's bound to happen I reckon.

I kind of agree with Maricopa that it is slightly negative. I kind of relate hobbyist and provider versus monger and whore. To me, monger and whore have a more negative meaning. But to be honest, we are all whores and mongers.

Let me ask the ladies, are you offended by the term whore or do you prefer provider?

I personally think any man offended by the term monger needs to get his head out of his ass.

I have always known it to be a term relating to any active male hobbyist. Monger sounds better than John although they are one in the same.

While the term monger technically relates to one who promotes nefarious activities keep in mind that pay for play is socially a nefarious activity and every monger knows this.
This is why he keeps such activities hidden.

That being said almost every monger considers p4p a positive if not a much needed social resource and considers it to be a victimless crime which should be legalized.

Anyone remotely offended by the term monger, whore, John, hooker etc. has lost sight of the fact that this is a nefarious activity and there is no respectable label for any participant as it ALL boils down to the exact same activity. This is the case no matter how much you try to cleanup your image.

I think being PC as an active participant in any activity which is deemed socially nefarious and illegal is the epitome of hypocrisy. To take oneself so seriously in the hobby is what strikes me as being most humorous.

"Thief" versus "Illegal acquirer of other people's property". One simply calls it the way it is and the other sounds like a thief in denial.

Thanks for chiming in CB. As one with 1500+ posts I do consider you to be OLD GUARD.
I agree that p4p has its place no matter if society deems it nefarious.
I agree with f2c that words will not hurt me.
If I were to review some backpage skank, no matter how poorly the session went, I wouldn't refer to her as some "cum-guzzling-gutter-slut", just because I choose not to use some words that I feel may be "base" or "coarse".
That said, I don't feel as though I try to put a veneer over my hobbying activities, or that I've succumbed to any form of hypocrisy.

Interesting question. To me, it's from "whoremonger," a derogatory term. Some of us whoremongers decided to to use it as a badge of pride. Sort of "hell yes, I'm a whoremonger. Up yours you if you don't like it."

I guess "monger" was originally a neutral term for anyone selling certain items like a fishmonger or ironmonger.

fucktard, hmmm, just because I am retarded and an old fuck, I would not call my fellow mongers that.

So the politically correct word is Hobbyist?

And all other words are "pet" names, unless you easily get offended, then they are setting you off and you get to BLOW , hmm, I am warming up to the idea.......

I suspect, like any "label", that it can be taken in a negative light.

Having only been on the board for 6 years, I don't recall ever hearing the term used in a negative way, rather as a neutral alternative to "hobbyist".

Heck, it is shorter and easier to spell. LOL.

I suspect that any label may be used in a negative way, especially when you ad paraverbals to the conversation (rather than simply seeing the word in print).

If a man does NOT want to be called a Monger, he has a right to speak up and say so, but, IMO, prior to his saying so, there is no call for offense to be taken.

(Y'all ready for the "Provider versus Prostitute" and "Stripper versus Dancer" label debate?) LOL.

Good question, Max.

It is what it is...

yes, its a derisive negative term. Much like WHORE is...

But the fact is we hobby in the whoring business. I have no issue with my morals, I'm not out to hurt anyone and everything I do is agreed between two adults.

Call me what you want, just call me when the first of the month rolls around and the salmon are running....

The word Monger is common place here in Costa Rica and does not give/have a negative image. For some reason we like to put new names on the same old thing to make it sound better, I guess it makes us feel better about ourselves. But it really does not matter what "name" you give it, if you are here reading this and a member you are a Monger. Like it or not.

By the way a big HOLA to you my dear Maxeen!
