Default Transphobia the guiding theme of Trump's hateful ad campaign

One out of every three dollars Trump has placed on TV is attacking transgender individuals.

Let that sink in a second.

I'd bet that Ted Cruz is spending an even higher proportion of his ad budget on women's sports and bathroom issues.

REALLY? I know some of you are scared shitless about transgender folks, especially all those illegal alien murderers getting their plumbing changed in prison, but REALLY?

Obviously, the MAGAs are hunkering down for what will be a giant trans assault on our democracy.

Every one of these moves, designed to divide Americans, is going to create more backlash at the ballot box. However, I wonder how many more homophobic, transphobic attacks we'll get to read about in the coming weeks/months.

Collateral damage in a political campaign is unacceptable.

The cruel truth behind Trump’s new attacks on trans people
The Trump campaign’s anti-trans advertising is pure scapegoating — with a bigger, sinister purpose.

by Aja Romano

Oct 30, 2024, 5:45 AM CDT

With mere days left on the 2024 political campaign trail, you might have noticed the Trump camp has increasingly turned to scapegoating familiar targets, including immigrants, the press, and women. It has also increasingly doubled down on attacks on trans people.

A recent ABC News report found that nearly a third of recent campaign funds — or $21 million, according to the report — for television advertising has been spent on anti-trans messaging from the Trump campaign and various conservative political groups. The independent journalist collective the Bulwark pushed the total even higher — to $40 million poured into anti-trans advertising within the last five weeks.

The Election, ExplainedA pop-up newsletter explaining the 2024 election — the candidates, the issues that matter most, and how it will all impact your life.

The ads, paid for by the Trump campaign, use a litany of anti-trans coding, including photoshopping Kamala Harris to appear as though she’s posing beside a nonbinary person in a mustache and a dress, despite plenty of evidence that this strategy is a turn-off for voters. “Kamala even supports letting biological men compete against our girls in their sports,” one ad declares. All three ads attack Harris for supporting gender-affirmative care for incarcerated trans people, including surgery where medically necessary.

“Kamala is for they/them,” each ad concludes. “President Trump is for you.”

Given that trans people make up barely half of 1 percent of the US adult population and that trans-related issues are low on the priority list of most voters, many might find it baffling that Trump has focused so much of his attention on singling out trans people. Indeed, two media research groups, the left-leaning Data for Progress and video marketing firm Ground Media, working in partnership with GLAAD, each released studies last week finding that the ads had no real impact on voter decision-making and instead alienated many viewers, even among Republicans, who felt they were “mean-spirited.”

So then why do them? Well, there’s “winning” in terms of appealing to voters, and then there’s “winning” in terms of determining the conversation. Keeping the focus on trans people — Harris’s actual policy proposals do almost nothing to advance their status — fires up a certain base and crowds out other discussion.

But the fallout here isn’t voters distracted from the real issues. The fallout instead comes in an important detail from one of those aforementioned studies. Ground Media found that while the negative messaging didn’t change viewers’ minds about Harris, it did significantly increase viewers’ negativity about trans and nonbinary people across all demographics.

In other words, these ads help to reinforce the idea of a common enemy. They are continuing — which is to say winning, in a very real sense — the larger ongoing culture war against queer and trans people. The willingness of Trump and his supporters to invest in these ads arguably indicates that even if Harris wins the election, marginalized communities in red states will still be under threat from Trump supporters and from growing legal restrictions on those regions.

But trans people aren’t isolated targets. They are scapegoats in the historical sense — canaries in the coal mine for the growing march of fascism in the US. That puts all of us in danger.

Trump centering anti-trans sentiment in his campaign strategy is not new. It’s the culmination of a decade-long conservative political strategy of weaponizing anti-trans messaging to undermine and reverse what was a broad cultural shift toward LGBTQ equality.

In 2013, in a landmark move, the American Psychiatric Association reclassified gender dysphoria — the feeling of not being aligned with your presumed-at-birth gender — so it was no longer classified as a mental disorder, thereby setting the stage for a much-needed societal shift toward accepting and understanding trans people.

The following year, Time magazine placed Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox on its cover, declaring that trans rights were “America’s next civil rights frontier.”

The backlash was almost instantaneous. A month later, the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant religious group in the country, passed a resolution singling out trans people and stating, “[W]e oppose all cultural efforts to validate claims to transgender identity.”

As the Supreme Court’s 2015 decision to legalize same-sex marriage took effect, conservative groups turned away from targeting queer people to instead target trans people in a “divide and conquer” strategy, as a conservative organizer named Meg Kilgannon summarized in a 2017 Family Research Council panel: “For all of its recent success, the LGBT alliance is actually fragile,” she told the assembly. “If you separate the T from the alphabet soup, we’ll have more success.”

To do this, conservatives joined forces with unlikely allies, including “trans-exclusionary radical feminists,” to drum up antagonistic sentiments against trans people. Right-wingers spread alarmism, rolling out dozens of anti-trans bathroom laws across the nation, then using them to introduce other anti-trans ideas into local conservative platforms, all of them coming straight out of the moral panic playbook. These tactics didn’t directly address the sociocultural progress that trans people were making; instead, they cultivated a new wave of unfounded fear and alarmism about trans people themselves.

And the propaganda has only gotten more effective over time. Where anti-trans bathroom bills mostly failed a decade ago, they’re now coming back into fashion; last week, Odessa, Texas, passed a “bathroom” bill that offers a $10,000 bounty paid to anyone who spies a trans person using the “wrong” bathroom.

The core elements we see used to attack and oppress trans people in the US in 2024 aren’t really about trans people; we’ve seen these same fearmongering tropes weaponized against numerous marginalized groups throughout history.

They serve a greater political purpose — not just to demonize one specific group of people but to reinforce an in-group mentality that can then be deployed against all enemies. These attacks are a political cudgel.

This strategy harks back to another era of fascism. It’s vital to recognize the parallels to Hitler’s Germany here (especially given John Kelly’s recent allegations that Trump praised Hitler himself): to understand that trans and queer people aren’t being attacked in isolation, but rather in tandem with immigrants, the disabled and mentally ill, and women.

The strategy at work deploys moral hysteria, a culture-wide “othering” of marginalized groups, and most importantly a push for a government response to the perceived problem of these outlying groups. By unifying around the public’s negative perceptions of these groups, the Republican Party amasses power and control at all levels of government. Trump has threatened repeatedly to wield that amassed power against his political opponents if he is reelected. And this, ultimately, is the real threat — not just to trans people, but to everyone.

This is plain stupid, making this into a campaign issue. Yeah, only 1/2 of 1% of the population is trans and only a few % are gay. But a lot of younger voters view discrimination against LGBTQ as an important issue. This type of targeted advertising just might drive more Democrats than Republicans to the polls. I suspect Trump actually doesn't give a damn what bathrooms people use or what sports teams they compete on.

You don't get it. That's NOT the issue. The issue is paying for healthcare for transitioning people.

Trump uses it as an issue to create a bigger gulf between us and them.

GW Bush used same sex marriage the same way.

It's surely worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Chit, I'll pee with anybody!

Yeah, but that doesn't stop him from making that his biggest campaign issue and alienating the largest growing segment of the voting population. (Hint - it ain't old white men).

He chose poorly.

Why should my taxes pay for elective transgender surgeries in prisons. It's not healthcare. It's a mental illness or cynical depravity or delusional impressionable teenagers duped by social pressure.
If they want to be gay let them be gay. If they want to cross-dress, we've had that forever.
Sure, as a guy I don't care if lesbians use my bathroom, but I sure as heck have a problem with strange men sharing a bathroom with kids of the opposite gender or males on girls sports teams. What's the point even of having girls sports then.
It's preposterous and obscene.
If politicians like Cruz latch onto that then I can't blame them. Democrats have become the party of the weird. Unforced error on their part.

Good luck with getting Dems "back to normal". They're all hopelessly addicted to crazy pills!

Transgender Sports Is a 2024 Sleeper Issue

Democratic Sens. Brown, Tester and Baldwin are all under fire for their votes.

By The Editorial Board

Oct. 13, 2024 4:25 pm ET

Every election has issues that are predictable—abortion and the economy this year—but also some that surprise the political class. This year one sleeper issue is progressive transgender coercion, which is playing against Democrats in races across the country.

Consider the ad running in Ohio against Sen. Sherrod Brown, in which a narrator says Mr. Brown is “too liberal for Ohio,” and he voted “to let transgender biological men participate in women’s sports.”

Some media fact-checkers are calling this claim false, but not without astounding sleight of hand. The ad, sponsored by a Republican-aligned Super PAC, cites Mr. Brown’s vote against a failed 2021 amendment offered by Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville. “When we pull up this vote on the U.S. Senate website,” says a report by WKYC in Cleveland, “we see it had nothing to do with allowing transgender people to participate in women’s sports. It was actually only about money.”

Only money? “Specifically,” WKYC explains, “Brown voted against including an amendment in the American Rescue Plan Act that would have stripped federal funding from Ohio schools if those schools allowed transgender people to participate in women’s sports.” Ergo, the ad’s claim is “false,” and Mr. Brown “did not vote ‘to let transgender biological men participate in women’s sports.’”

PolitiFact has a similar sloppy take, saying that such arguments about Mr. Brown are false because the 2021 amendment, as well as a similar one this year, “did not dictate athletic eligibility.” Well, not directly, but adding strings to federal funding is a common way for both parties in Congress to drive policy, and it’s hard to imagine any public school telling Uncle Sam to take his money and scram.

The LGBT activist group GLAAD confirms our point when it says Mr. Brown has “consistently opposed attempts to ban transgender athletes from participating in sports aligned with their gender identity.” It means this as a compliment.

The issue is popping up in other campaigns. An ad in Wisconsin says Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin “voted to let biological men into women’s sports.” Republican challenger Eric Hovde gets spontaneous applause when he raises the issue at campaign events. In Montana, an ads says Sen. Jon Tester “voted to let men compete against our girls,” and “those aren’t Montana values.” The proliferation of these arguments against so many Democratic incumbents suggests it’s resonating with the public.

A pluralistic society depends on an attitude of live and let live, and American adults are and should be free to make their own choices about gender. But what many people resent is having progressive cultural values imposed on them. That includes compelling their daughters to compete against athletes who were born male.

Last year 69% of Americans told Gallup that “transgender athletes should only be allowed to compete on sports teams that conform with their birth gender.”

This isn’t bigotry. For most Americans it’s a matter of fairness, as well as the equal opportunity for women in sports enshrined in Title IX. Not long ago most Democrats believed in that principle. But these days the hard edge of the transgender movement has dictated that its view of gender must be imposed nationwide. Senate Democrats have toed that line.

This includes whether minors should have access to medical gender transitions. That Super PAC ad about Sen. Brown says he supports “allowing puberty blockers and sex-change surgeries for minor children.” The source is an interview in which Mr. Brown said: “A child’s healthcare decisions are between them, their parents, their families, their doctors, not politicians.”

Mr. Brown’s campaign told WKYC that his remarks “were not in support of puberty blockers or gender reassignment surgeries,” but merely a call to keep politicians out of it. That sure sounds like a position of “allowing” minors to access such treatments. Somehow, though, WKYC also rated this claim as “false.” Who fact checks the fact-checkers?

This media conformity is one reason the transgender sports issue is catching Democrats by surprise. The press portrays any dissent on the issue as out of political bounds and gives it no coverage or dismisses as benighted bias what millions of Americans view as common sense. This means voters may hear about it only when a politician makes it a campaign issue, and it might cost Democrats control of Congress this year.

Murdoch's WSJ is a great source. But they have a shitty sports section.

Those candidates are under fire because the MAGAs are hanging their hopes on this issue.

They know their base (with a concentration on non-college educated young white males) is scared shitless by LGBTQ+ individuals. They're aiming this whole closing arguments on something that's blowing up in their faces.

Again, it's an act of a desperate campaign. There aren't enough homophobes in this country to make it worth the investment. They'd be better off offering a million bucks a day to people who .... oops, they're doing that too.

Hmmm...

"65% of voters disagree that taxpayer-funded health care programs should be required to pay for gender reassignment surgery, including 84% of Republicans, 40% of Democrats, and 72% of swing voters."

And that's just surgery for ordinary Americans. They didn't even ask (the narrower question) about forcing taxpayers to pick up the tab for jailed prisoners and illegal immigrants.

I would say given the way the issue is polling, the only people who are "scared shitless" are the Democrats who were stupid enough to vote on the wrong side of it!

Trumps positions on all the top issues, including abortion, poll better than the dems. Harris’s only message is that she’s not Trump. She’s been forced to flip-flop on nearly everything she once claimed to believe in. She’s the most phony candidate who’s ever ran for President, by a lot.

You got all that from a 30-second political spot?

Then you're the target audience.

We don't talk about a lot of that other stuff here, so please tread lightly.

It's a cookie cutter attack aimed across all states with close Senate/House races. Same footage, etc. Same ad running in the Ohio senate race is running in Texas. Only the names have been changed to protect the victim.

This MAGA attack doesn't have the creativity to make the ads even look or sound different.

I don't know any xenophobes, homophobes or transphobes who aren't already voting for Trump. Maybe there are some, this simplistic attack won't make them change their position. As previously stated, it'll probably impel more Democrats to the polls than "undecideds"
