Not sure why you would have picked it to stay but non of the hotels on the Paseo, Independence Ave corridor are safe to stay in. Two miles up the road on Armour there are a couple of decent places. The Capri, Royal Inn, and the Adimarl are drug and crime infested.

Yea I'm not sure who told you to stay there, but even if you drive around those motels and the area you will see why it is the way it is. Be careful and maybe next time you should ask for a little advice on decent places to stay. Good Luck Stay safe out there.

Years ago when I worked in that area, we used to go eat lunch at the Capri hotel. It was later that I learned the FBI had bugged the tables because certain mob bosses conducted business there. One of those urban legends that you never know if true or not. DD might have more information.

But definately an area to stay away from.

The old Howard Johnson's up by the airport was "wired for sound" by several agencies in many of the rooms on two separate floors, Dennis learned that the hard way (I don't believe they are even open any longer) . . . I have no idea about the Capri . . . I'm not old enough to remember a time when it wasn't a complete dive (the Capri), let alone that anyone would consider having lunch there (or that it was served). A lot of places in that neighborhood have a 'past life', I can see where the Capri may have been one of those types of establishments.

Kisses,

- Jackie

Capri used to be under surveillance back in the 70's early 80's due to "Italian" ownership-that much I know for certain. I've heard rumors that several people that would go to meetings there were never seen again-that is rumor to me as I've never been able to verify, but the wars of the 70's in NE make it very plausible.

Go West a few blocks for the Italian section. There were some private clubs that are now closed. West a little more was the Cotton Eye Joe on Third Street.

I was not going to respond because it has been expressed to me that I speak about my "friends" to much LOL. The hotel Capri is located right next to what used to be Schemeca's deli and meats. Schemeca's was owned by Carl Deluna's family and was the place where the scene from Casino takes place where the two guys are arguing and the old lady is getting on to them for cussing. The Capri, Royal and The Admiral were owned by organized crime up to the mid 90's. Yes the resturant was wired but there is some confusion about the name. People confuse the Capri hotel with the Villa Capi pizza and lounge located at Prospect and Ind Ave. The Villa capri in Overland Park is the same family. This was a major hangout for the bosses and a lot of business was conducted in the back room and in the rooms above the building next to it which just recently burned down. The buisness in the Villa Capri is now J-Mart. So to answer you question yes the used to frequent that hotel lounge and the FBI used to have a strong presense there, but the Villa Capri was an actual HQ's.

The feds wired the HOJo at the airport because it was used for a meeting place for a transfer of the Las Vegas schemming funds.

In 1989 Sal Manzo's car was found parked there and some of his personal belongings were found on Cliff Drive. He however has never been found and is still on the KC missing persons websight. He was a bookie and fence. The rumors are accurate, but that can be said for a lot of place along the ave and in little Italy (columbas park area). The area around the Capri had a lot of mob activity, in addition to the hotels i mentioned you had Palmentere brothers trucking, Virgin Tavern (admiral and Virgina), Local 53 or is it 51 on Admiral and I -29, Chubbies burgers, Passintino's brothers Funural home, I could go on and on but lets just say you could not throw a rock in any direction without hitting olive oil. Columbas park at that time and the Market area was nothing but Italian "family" owned businesses

Aww yeah the cotten eye joe's, owned by Joe Cammisano and was the bar that started the Quey wars. Lost a good friend over that mess, no one won, a lot of money was lost. Okay thats enough tripping down memory lane for me. If anyone has a question ask, but please make sure the question is regarding the past okay.......

DD, thanks for the history lesson! You have a great amount of knowledge, I'm glad this topic evolved the way it did. A buddy of mine is currently reading a book on the 70's wars...now I have to borrow it when he's done.
