Kitty really needs to take pictures of her pieces-- not to satisfy the board, but for insurance purposes. She also needs to get a policy on them because unlike bank accounts, safe deposit boxes are NOT insured. She needs pictures of each individual item, along with a copy of the receipt that came in the box. Often times, they also send a second itemized appraisal with pieces that expensive simply due to insurance (Yes, I've received a few big ticket items from Needless Markup over the years).

Seriously-- let her know she needs to do these things to protect her assets.

Yes, anyone with expensive jewelry must have it insured IMO. My home insurance covers jewelry theft/loss just like everyone else's but it's maxed out at $20k. So, you need to contact your insurance carrier and tell them you need a "rider" or "floater" to your existing policy, or tell them you need to "schedule" your jewelry above the max in your home policy. I simply got appraisals (replacement value)for the pieces and sent them to my insurance company so they can determine how much to charge me for the "rider policy". I have ~$100k of rider insurance and I think it costs me $1,200 annually. If one were to possess $300k of jewelry, such as this Kitty woman, I would suspect the annual costs of coverage would be ~$3,500.

It saved my ass, twice. I had a presidential Rolex stolen and I was paid replacement value ($30k, although I only paid $18k) once the police report was submitted. A year later my wife (at the time) lost her wedding ring while we were diving in Papua New Guinea, and we literally had the check in the mailbox upon arrival back into the US.

Setting aside everyone's differences on this thread, GP's post was 100% accurate and I would suggest to friends and enemies alike to get that expensive stuff covered!
