I was washing cars over the weekend and listening to what I consider the greatest big-band album of all time, Maynard Ferguson's MF Horn 4 and 5 Live at Jimmy's. I got to the next-to-last track, "Got the Spirit" and all of a sudden realized after 40 years of listening to it how sexual that piece is. It starts out with a Bruce Johnstone bari sax solo, a slow-paced melodious piece that could be representative of foreplay. Then the band kicks, blowin' and goin' at a much faster pace. Toward the end, you hear the low brass and saxes starting to build in the background. The the trumpets join them, also in the background. t starts to build to a climax as Maynard and tenor saxman Ferdinand Povel trade licks up in the higher ranges. Maynard finishes climactically as only he can (that part for me has always been as close to an orgasm as you can get without having sex), and then, the withdrawal and afterglow as the band ends by singing, "Amen." I think it's one of the all-time greats.
