You need to differentiate between payments that go straight to Hunter personally (i.e. Burisma board "compensation") and money that flows into private equity funds (e.g. Seneca Partners) and is invested to earn a return for its sources.

In the latter case, Hunter and his private equity partners collect a fee that varies depending on the success of the ventures they manage. (Or pretend to manage, since Hunter has no real background or experience in private equity.)
