Democrats accused Gingrich of violating the agreement, but it was forwarded to the House for approval.On January 21, 1997, the House voted 395 to 28 to reprimand Gingrich, including a $300,000 "cost assessment" to recoup money spent on the investigation. The full committee panel did not agree whether tax law had been violated.

In 1999, the IRS cleared the organizations connected with the courses.

Newt hardly resigned in disgrace as he had a national approval rating of 45% and enjoyed overwhelming support in his district at the time of his resignation. This to me is another example of Republicans making an attempt to keep their house in order while Democrats commit far worse misdeeds and will fight forever more to remain in power [Charlie Rangel (11 convictions) et al].

While Clinton claims the credit, it was Newt and the GOP congress who balanced the budget and reformed welfare, dragging Clinton along as he kicked and screamed. No doubt Clinton was a better politician then Newt and frequently out maneuvered him politically.

On a personal level I don't like Gingrich but he has a rich pedigree and there is little doubt in my mind that he would make a very competent president.

Newt likes to talk, and uses the election to stay in the public eye for business reasons, but he has no organization in any of the primary states and therefore doesn't really intend to do anything. He's just using the debates as a forum to gin up more clients for his consulting business.

He keeps careening from one ethical question to another even though he's never really been squarely nailed on anything.

Perhaps the latest is the 300k he took from FannieMae, which he falsely claims was for 'advice as a historian on their lending criteria.' It was of course nothing of the kind as he has nothing to offer there; it was for political influence.

I actually sat through one of his "classes" on "civilization." He fancies himself a scholar [where's the Phd?] but he only referenced Alvin Toffler in for every argument he made. Alvin Toffler?

I would attribute Newt's appearance as a candidate originally as more of a ploy to promote his then current and many books. Newt has actually received upwards of $1.6M from Fannie and Freddie Mac 99-08.
