Flynn at one point understood this and in fact gave a speech advocating the Muslims Dictator overthrow but after being paid a short time later Flynn changed his position and advociated for this Muslim Dictator.

Mattis on the other hand resigned his position because Trump withdrew US troops in Syria and he felt that would mean that the Muslim Dictator in Turkey would then start slaughtering the Kurds in Syria who had fought side by side with American troops to topple ISIS.
