The Sunni/Shia division was based on who each faction believed was the rightful successor to Mohammed.
However, caliphs seek to unify all Muslims and have at times. The Abbasid caliphate which ended in 1258 was the last real caliphate which could plausibly claim to have unified Muslims. Since then the two sides have been continuously divided.

However, she'd probably be arrested if she showed up in the Muslim nation wearing her skimpy cheerleader outfit.
