I can imagine certain shops are already in the task force’s crosshairs, I also feel as though much more pressure will be aimed at property management/owners who rent to illicit parlors.

What you choose to ignore are the enhancements from multiple offenses and the use of a prior activity history when assessing punishment. There are some who actually believe they are "hidden" from the government's view by posting under an alias/handle. To correct your statement: It's not a felony for the FIRST OFFENSE until September 1st.

You seem to think the other person involved won't roll. She did the "screening"!

That pressure has been ongoing for years in Harris County Attorney's Office ... there is a "division" for small business and licensing enforcement. The county precincts do their visits to become familiar with the participants and their licensing. So, this "new law" (which it's not) will deter more than it will increase enforcement activity. It will increase funding/grants.

There is another provision in the law, which is not new, that has similar provisions as does the Federal law surrounding the topic. It's the "age" section. For Asian/Spa regulars it should be wise to review with a mindset of defending litigation in which older folks pretend to be young and younger folks pretend to be older.

Ok I may be a little slow but how is anyone going to know what I did in a spa? I could have gotten a legit massage with nothing else. Maybe I did not know they provide other services. And you drive down Crosstimbers during the day and there are 50+ hookers standing under a out of business gas station awning. Please explain it to me.

So now we have a task force to bust amp users and we let some seven time convicted felon lowlife out of jail on a $10 bond. WTF

It’s about being a “Deterrent”

A bill designed to combat sex trafficking is the first in the nation to make soliciting sex from a prostitute a state jail felony carrying jail time of six months up to two years and a potential $10,000 fine for a first offense.
Get convicted a second time and the possible punishment could be 10 years.
Buying sex from a minor is already a felony, but as of Sept. 1, patronizing an adult prostitute will be a more serious offense as well.
For many years, law enforcement has gone after prostitutes, pimps and madams. Customers, or "Johns" as they are often called, could face arrest and maybe embarrassment if their names turned in the local newspaper but, for the most part, got off pretty easy with just a citation — if that.
The new law is designed to go after demand as well as supply, so to speak. Lawmakers hope stronger penalties will make potential customers think twice about spending money with prostitutes.
Will it? That remains to be seen. A lot will depend on how vigorously police apply the law and how consistently courts hand down tough sentences. Sex is a strong motivator. But making the potential punishment a lot more severe and more likely can be a strong deterrent.

I get targeting both supply and demand on trafficking where the goods are underage or forced to participate. A full on attack on that front makes sense. On the other hand, consenting adults of legal age, why target that? Moral stance, good headlines, maybe less work since they don't have to determine consent? As far as I know, all the shops I go to are consensual. But I can land in jail the same as a pedophile or human trafficker? Wow. Just wow.

Legislating morality is an exercise in futility.

"They" aren't. "Trafficking" is not a "moral" issue.

In this environment it is a funding issue.

Remind me again … how does it all work? I arrange for a visit, I come or she comes. We ask each other: as usual? Sure! We both respond. LE comes when I leave and charge me or her for what? For an envelope I accidentally left on a table? Nothing is there to be strong enough evidence in a court room. Unless I am missing something.

If MiMi in the next room makes or accepts an offer from a UC or CI, they can grab everyone in the place. It may not stick, but it is still a ride downtown.
